I20 is one attempt at solving this problem. I work over at a company that is working on I20 ethernet and raid devices. Our target OS is Windows NT, for reasons discussed above, but SCO, IBM (for OS/2), and Novell have already written preliminary drivers for it. We are looking at having these devices preinstalled on top of the line Dell, IBM, HP, and Compaq servers. Our tests have shown major improvments in CPU usage over 3Com dumb nics. Also, a friend and I, being the resident Linux people, will be working on Linux drivers in the near future.
