    I read his response.

And he also mentions that he has multiple degrees from several colleges. Unless he is outright lying (why would he have reason to do that now?), he seems like a very intelligent guy. Americans sometimes fall into the trap of assuming that anybody who doesn't know English must be an idiot (hell, /Americans/ don't even know English, let alone a second or third language). I lived in Turkey quite a while, and I have to tell you Turkish people are the nicest people on earth. They, and many other people of foreign countries, are very hospitable and welcoming (as opposed to your typical American New Yorker or Texan).

Turkey is a great country and has some really amazing archeological sites, and a great tourist industry.

Sure, most linuxvolk probably never encounter this cieling...but is it being worked on by somebody somewhere? We can't just say every time somebody does a benchmark "Oh, well, you forgot to use the latest kernel that just came out an hour ago, along with X number of requisite patches".

Unfortunately I do this by simply making passwords from services they are associated with (e.g., randomportal.com -> r4nd0mp0rt4l). I guess that's a weak link in my scheme...although the only way to break it would be to actually know my scheme...which I guess I've just given to every slashdotter :\

That doesn't exactly hold. Replace my use of "speed" with "transistors" or "density", and it is still the same. Every 18-24 months density/transistors/speed may double in chips /on average/, but at the same time there are very expensive ones with higher densities/whatever that are faster, and very cheap ones with lower densities/whatever, so to remove the money factor is not fair. At any point in time, regardless of moore's law, anyone can build a faster machine simply by throwing more money, more resources at it. So it is not fair to compare machines like this. They should be normalized to density or performance per dollar (or any given monetary unit).

    What is an Operating System?
A program that acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware.
    Operating system goals:
    - Execute user programs and make solving user problems easier.
    - Make the computer system convenient to use.
Use the computer hardware in an efficient manner.

In general there are two definitions:

    1) an OS is what makes the hardware useable
    2) the OS is the environment and API in which programs are able to run

In practice it is typically both (although different components do different things within).
