  1. I liked this answer about language advocacy... on Why Language Advocacy is Bad · · Score: 3

    ...from the C++ faq.

    In 99% of the cases, programming language selection is dominated by business considerations, not by technical considerations. Things that really end up mattering are things like availability of programming environment for the development machine, availability of runtime environment(s) for the deployment machine(s), licensing/legal issues of the runtime and/or development environments, availability of trained developers, availability of consulting services, and corporate culture/politics. These business considerations generally play a much greater role than compile time performance, runtime performance, static vs. dynamic typing, static vs. dynamic binding, etc.

    Anyone who argues in favor of one language over another in a purely technical manner (i.e., who ignores the dominant business issues) exposes themself as a techie weenie, and deserves not to be heard.

    Please. Not to defend Michoka, but if I've ever heard ignorance from bashers (or advocates) the worst have come from the Apple camp. Besides, at least on the technical side he makes points you really can't dismiss.

    What's the relevance of a 7 year late OS? Apple makes good computers, but the bottom line is that the OS has been prehistoric. Apple is now trumpeting OSX with its amazing features like protected memory and preemtive multitasking, but those are features near 30 years old, features that (gasp!) even Windows has. Yes, if I were a Mac user, I would complain about no real multitasking.

    Why not quote a marketer about technical issues?
    Oh yes, that never happens.

    It should be noted that it is KDE that is being included, and not QT.

    QT has always been in Debian; the QPL is a DFSG-license, and QT2.1 is in Potato (the stable branch) right now (I think the qt1.x is in Debian as well, though in non-free). However, now that QT2.2 will be GPLed, KDE's licensing conflict is over and that's why it's being included.

    Sure, it may be Java rip-off, but at least they've submitted it to ECMA for standarization. They're right when they said, "That is something fundamentally different from our competitors who wandered around the standards bodies, looking for someone to rubber-stamp their proprietary lanugages."

    I, for one, like the fact that somebody's trying to make a language the right way (whether it be Java or C#), but is also interested in making it standarized (which is certainly not Java right now).

  16. Re:Debian, hopelessly out-of-date? on Ian Murdock Answers · · Score: 1

    The claim that Debian is out of date and has a slow release schedule is rather overstated, in my opinion.

    Firstly, Debian releases many minor releases ("outdated" slink is at 2.1r5) which have updates to the most recent security alerts.

    In addition, there's apt, which updates your system incredibly easily. In fact, there was a recent post on debian-devel where a user updated from 1.3 (released 3 years ago) to frozen quite easily.

    Basically, if you want to run an "up-to-date" system with Debian, it's release cycle is not getting in your way.

    Linux, always on the cutting edge of technology, is now supporting a movie a new format called "MPEG". This latest advance, promises Linux advocates will continue to widen the gap between other competing operating systems, which have a far smaller portion of the OS market.

    "With this new addition to LinuxPPC, I expect Apple to abandon any further development on any OSes they may be researching. Clearly, the ability to play MPEG movies is something else nobody can boast." said Sam Lantinga, who wrote some utilities used for this technological leap. "Luckily for our competitiors, nobody is using such new technology... it should be ages before anyone can harness this new power," Lantinga contiuned.

    In the Intel market, Linux also continues to dominate, due to its ease of installation, consistent interface and clear documentation.
