It's not impossible to get by in the silicon valley on 50k, it's just stupid unless you have some good reason for staying here.
Born and raised here. Like the rest of my family, I'll probably be priced out in a few years.
[...] you aren't saving money for retirement [...]
That's an interesting assumption because I never commented on what I have in my brokerage and retirement accounts. As I pointed out elsewhere, what I do mention gets lowballed and what I don't mention gets made up to fit a negative narrative.
Pointing to other people and saying "But I'm not as bad as them!" is pretty fucking stupid.
I'm frequently told by Slashdotters that it's impossible to live in Silicon Valley on $50K per year. I like to point out that there are people who make significantly less than me who also live in Silicon Valley. No, they don't commute two hours each way from Stockton. Silicon Valley has pockets of extreme poverty and extreme wealth, but there are plenty people like myself who live somewhere in between.
There's always bankruptcy!
It's hard to file for bankruptcy when your net worth exceeds your debt obligations.
creimer mainly got shit for spamming Amazon Affiliate links.
The funny thing is that the clearly identified affiliate link in my signature line gets twice the click volume and the same sale volume than all the links that I posted as creimer.
I know he's been around longer, but he started posting frequently a few months back.
As creimer, I posted 8,000 comments over ten years (2006-2016) and 4,000 comments this year. My merry band of wanker trolls have kept me busy. If I was to drop "creimer" in anonymous comment (see above), they come running out of the woodwork to hump leg.
Yes, conspicuous consumption is definitely something to be proud of, when you're barely making subsistence wages.
Conspicuous consumption would be upgrading to an iPhone 7 RED, getting an iPad Pro, and then figuring out how to pay for it. A dilemma that several of my friends who make significantly less than I do are struggling with. One of them told me if I had gotten the latest iPad Pro (it didn't fit my budget), he would find it necessary to upgrade to the latest iPad Pro with a higher memory capacity to stay ahead of me. And Slashdotters think I have money problems.
Deferring your financial ruin to a few months down the road isn't something to be proud of...
I paid off the lease balance on my iPhone 6s so I now own it outright. My iPod Touch (1st gen) lasted eight years before the batteries died. I expect the iPhone 6s to last that long. Since I'm a Sprint customer for 20+ years, I got a sweet deal on the newest iPad and my monthly bill is unchanged. I can either pay that off over two years or use my forthcoming Christmas bonus to pay off the balance.
It's probably subjective, but can you be more specific?
When I was in college 15 years ago, NetBeans was more polished and ran better on my Dell laptop. Eclipse today probably has more plugins than NetBeans to do something else beside Java. When I developed PHP modules for Joomla ten years ago, I used Eclipse with the PHP plugin. Today I use PyCharm for Python that is based on the IntelliJ IDEA IDE.
FTFY. But don't worry, creimer - once you get your infosec certifications, you'll be making big-boy money and can afford some big-boy toys of your own.
Like the brand new iPad (5th gen) that I got for no money down through Sprint to replace my five-year-old iPad 2?
I was with a friend when we were looking at HDTV several years ago at Best Buy. A Bruce Springsteen concert video was playing on a 56" HDTV. My friend noted that he could see the wood grain on the guitar and then told me the entire history of that guitar. Too much info.
You declared bankruptcy recently, you make a crap salary and live in an expensive area.
I declared bankruptcy in 2011. That was six years ago.
Obviously you do not have substantial retirement savings.
Retirement accounts are protected in bankruptcy.

how about you give the real numbers - that'll really rile up the trolls to see the huge amount of money you're making.

If you ask me and many others, he got everything he deserved.
Including posting dick pics with my contact info on Russian image websites? I'm still cleaning up that mess.

It doesn't surprise me that real estate around Apple's new spaceship campus is taking off like a rocket.

As a former NetBean IDE user, I find this development disturbing.
I just wait for the movies to go on sale for $5 to $10. I haven't paid full price for a video in years.

Jesus, what exactly happened six months ago?
An asshat falsely accused me of threatening to shoot him in a political discussion and things rapidly escalated from there.
creimer was here for years before, after all.
I wrote ~8,000 comments in ten years.
Did he do something especially obnoxious or offputting?
I wrote ~4,000 comments this year.
This isn't fair! I want a merry band of wanker trolls too!
1) Be fat, happy and successful. ...
2) Submit stories and comment frequently.
3) Ignore trolling comments whenever possible.
4)
5) Profit!
How did you manage to get a merry band of wanker trolls?
By pwning them, of course.
I was hoping that part of the deal that creimer made with /. management would limit the number of shitposts/amazon spam he could make a day...
I was hoping that my merry band of wanker trolls would stop the daily shitposting of my comments. Oh, well. No good deed goes unpunished on Slashdot.
Not that slow, J.J. Abrams signed on to direct Episode IX today.
I was hoping the George Lucas would direct Episode IX and have Jar-Jar come out of carbonite to bring balance to the Force. :P
Of course, it's a slow news day. Everyone is watching the Apple press event. Expect a flood of stories after the event.
Right, because why would you go to Whole Foods - you don't eat anything they'd sell there, with their emphasis on healthy natural foods.
Tofu, raw milk cheese and amber ale.
Good thing we have a highly rated commentator and moderator here, his name is creimer. Do you know him?
Didn't he win the Nobel prize for literature a few years ago?
The summary writer is an idiot. But then, this is Slashdot.
What Slashdot need are editors who edit and proofread. They shouldn't be relying on idiot summary writers to do all the work.
As a layman programmer, I find it easier to write good code than to write good unit tests than to write good documentation.
