I find that when I work remotely I end up just posting random bs on slashdot all day. Don't get me wrong - I get the minimum amount of work done to not get fired, but I don't exactly get recognized either. Usually I exaggerate simple things and think everyone believes me. I feel in the back of my head my boss probably knows more than I do and sees through my bullshit. He still lets me do this - maybe because he himself doesn't care, or it's a seat that needs to be filled, and honestly at this low tier of skill, there aren't a lot of good resources available - they'd be doing something else if they were good.
Anywise - for people like me - working from home completely destroys our already not so great productivity. People better than me, especially on this site - I don't really know. Out of my peers I'm pretty much at the top of the food chain. They're not slashdotters though, and they don't have CS degrees. They're mostly blue-collar C-students who read CDW catalogs and know different electronic trinckets, but nothing about actual electronics. I'm really the only one who's reached the slashdot level of nerdness, and thanks to the remote work, I don't get fired for being here all day.
let me correct that before the shitstorm of asshats start applyling logic to words. the slashdot traffic specifically does not generate any revenue directly. slashdot actually does in theory cost me money for bandwidth, but it fits in the tier plan i pay for already.
the slashdot comments however do generate material for me to discuss on my blog, and non-slashdot people who visit the site do want content to read. it takes me hours and hours for all those books and blog posts and comments, but what else more interesting am i going to do with my time given my limited resources?
also - forget what i said a few weeks ago. i did mention that my income is not from ads but people buying things from me. that was actually two random people who within a week bought a book, and i projected out that weekly income several years forward.
I don't need to google, I have been in IT for 20 years. Started out video games - those weren't in Java either. All I'm saying is in my career, I have not seen Java. I am a virgual ditch digger though - not a software developer or DBA.
I'm 47 and do in fact provide desktop support, been in basic IT for 20 years now. They gave me a Sr. Systems Administrator title instead of money to keep me content, and we call the desktops "workstations" - but yeah, PC Support, sometimes rack n stack - whatever random basics need to get done. I'll plug in cables and shut/noshut ports on a switch, and know what a VLAN is, but don't expect me to fire up wireshark and debug the outage caused by spanning tree or know what unified IO is or anything.
I started as a video game tester, don't have a college degree (associate's), and make only about 50k, which does get me by. At this point, there is no changing of careers or learning major new things and specializing in them. I am quite content with my life though, and am much further ahead of the trailer trash I grew up with. This is what happens when you have shitty parents who drink and argue instead of helping you with your homework.
As far as serious or not - if I was kidding I wouldn't have hundreds of pages written about my life on my blog, nor the many books I sell on amazon. It doesn't make any real money, but I do get personal enjoyment just knowing someone is reading. https://www.kickingthebitbucke...
this is 350lb of me: http://www.hostingpics.net/vie...
when i take off my shirt, i have a red ring on my neck from the neckhole. now picture that on a bycycle with a backpack of groceries.
I see, so me not trusting a contract that does not have solid footing in the court system and keeps getting litigated, and using a different license is... Actually, I have no idea what you're trying to say. Crushing tinfoil on an antennaf? What, like rock salt? I don't think even you know twf you're talking about there, sport. Meanwhile I think I'll choose another open source license that has less frequent litigation challenging whether or not it's valid and move on to doing actual work.
I've been in IT for 20 years and started coding by typing in those programs they'd print in the old tech magazines. While I've seen C# and PHP, I don't know anyone who uses Java or PERL. I myself usually refactor in Python. This is in Silicone Valley though - I don't know about Europe (don't even have a passport).
I am not focused on that aspect of it. That's a brain disease - same one strippers have for example. Girls with super low self esteem who'll do anything for a dollar but they overcompensate. Same as people in really shitty countries talk like they're kings. Socially, the shittier someone's environment is and the less they can do about it, the more they act like Creimer. Notice he ignores every single post that logically drives him into a corner - even the ones that don't diss him in any way.
I'll give the weight thing as the simplest example. Clearly the guy does not regularly work out nor regularly have a 1500 calorie per day diet. He does that when he can, but not frequently enough. He eats candy because he likes candy, and the candy he eats is better for you than a snickers - it's just not enough for a diet. A 350lb 47 year old man who for work has to sit in a chair all day, has many clear inflamatory joint issues caused by a lifetime of that weight. It's very hard for someone like him to actually fix his career, or become healthy. He's not gaining weight though, and I would even say got a tiny bit better over the 5 years - if you really look deep at the photos. Maybe lost 5% bodyfat or so.
If you're 47 and in his position, there is no real good way out, and not much you can do to get your life completely together and enjoy it - it's too late. And just like the stripper he has to pay extra to fuck him, he overcompensates and creates a fake world for him. It's like a natural self-medicating SSRI that people's brains do when their lives are absolute shit and you can't fix it.
My life is not great, but given where I started and the lack of push for achievement by alcoholic abusive parents - by the time I was smart enough to start getting it together myself I was in no shape to compete with people you're used to seeing on slashdot. Know a lot of people who grew up as trailer trash and at 47 make 50k at a professional IT-job? Your peers went to harvard and are Sr Systems Administrators and DBAs and CPU designers. I apply patch policies to laptops. But your peers started in a safe suburb with parents who cared about grades. Mine started in the trailer park with me selling weed and are now robbing convenience stores or making meth, or dead or in jail.
Perspective. Get some.
I am currently working on getting my A+ certification - that's the goal for this year anyway. I don't really have the capacity to do much more - I tried college, didn't work out. I went to recruiting events - many, but all I could get hired for was a software tester for video games. We don't all have money to fall back on, and my family was shit. What is it you expect someone to do? I know I should have studied in school and made something of myself. When you're young and in a very bad family environment, you are not smart enough to push yourself yet or know what's out there. And then it's too late and you have to pay the bills.
I think considering all things, I have not done bad - maybe not as good as you, but I've had it harder than you from othe very very early start. I'm not exactly contributing brilliant things here, but I've been on the site since '98, and there are some much, much dumber idiots here than me. I'm also going to guess I'm not the only one with the lard problem.
My python script (on github soon!) is going to be apache licenced, and I would suggest other software developers do the same. The original version was GPL but after spending months refactoring I will be releasing my new code under Apache. There are too many problems surrounding the GPL, and none of it has precedent set by the courts. Opinions of random attorneys don't matter, and there are plenty both ways. In fact, I've stopped buying stock in companies that release GPL'ed products because of this - they'll soon be broke from attorney fees when it comes up in court.
To a normal adult, it's simply standing in the pool and they don't think about it. I on the other hand note the fact that I do not float and mark it off as an accomplishment.
You should look up calories in 100g of lentils adn calories in 100g of carrots. Hint - one of those is Terrible for losing weight. Eggs are about as bad as you can get for losing weight - look up the amount of fat (especially saturated) in 2 eggs - 2 eggs and you're over your Daily limit. Egg Beaters are all protein egg whites and taste almost as good as full eggs - perfect for losing weight. Guess what - that costs 10x the price of eggs. A man cannot survive on carrots and onions, and what you said - well it's just wrong.
"The Potato Hack was modeled after an 1849 diet plan "
I stoppet reading right there. Potatoes are a calorie-dense food and anyone who suggests eating potatoes to diet... Well actually anyone who suggests a diet plan from 1849, before we had "science" - I'm going to assume just like your chicken breas price that it's a joke. Chicken breast in all actual places an IT professional would live is about $6-7/lb.
That's ridiculous. Have you looked at the calories on a bag of "real oatmeal" - it's not the sugar or the milk. It's the oatmeal. Eating oatmeal is like eating bread and pasta - complex carbs that are meant to store a lot of energy. Learn something before talking about it.
On a diet. Chicken is extremely expensive. I only make 50k a year patching laptops, and have to life in a 400ft studio as it is. Retirement - forget it, ever. But it's very important for me to stay where I grew up, despite the mom who hated me all her life before she died, and the alcoholic dad. beans/nuts/potatoes/noodles/etc - everything but carrots on that list is a high calorie food. What I need to do is eat shiratake noodles from Japan, Chicken breast, turkey breast, etc. This is not cheap, and if I could spend literally half my salary on food, I believe I would in fact get skinny. A diet that's pretty much all protein and dietary fiber would do it, but that is not cheap and I have to choose between rent and food if I do that.
I'm on Atkins, but I'm not hitting the carbs low enough for the liver to start doing it's fat burning thing. I eat a granola bar or power bar in the morning simply because I don't have time to eat something else before work starts. I count it to be about 1500 calories, but I literally sit most of the day in a chair. I do hit the gym once in a while, but I'm 47 now. I have pretty hardcore inflamation going on everywhere, and anything that really burns calories involving legs is out. I do back-type stuff, but that's not an aerobic activity, and I can't do a lot of weight or sets.
I'll put it this way - when you've been overweight till you're 42 and decide to go on a diet, the damage has been done and it's harder to lose weight. Cut the calories, have no energy to lug around 350lb, sit in a chair all day.
I was born and have lived in Silicone Valley all my life. I was born quite large and have been trying to lose weight all my life. It's not as much about diet as survival at this point now that I am 47. I don't make enough for fresh or healthy food here - that stuff can get expensive, so I end up eating stuff that's cheap and gets me the 1500 calories per day that I am allowed for the least money. If anything can get food prices down, I am all for it - I am just trying to live at this point. So, in the style of slashdot - I welcome our new Robotic overlords that can get me groceries for less.
I find that when I work remotely I end up just posting random bs on slashdot all day.
