  1. Re:But then you can't upgrade the DLL's... on Microsoft to End DLL Confusion · · Score: 1

Go and read how .NET (for it is that which manages this) handles side-by-side versions of assemblies. You can require a certain version but allow alternatives.

It's interesting to note how a large number of posts here are deriding MS for doing this and introducing "more bloat"... probably the same people who have been insulting Windows for having DLL Hell.

..but companies with Macs on the desktop will buy legal copies of Windows to go with Virtual PC.

This is going to be interesting - I work for a software reseller in the UK and virtual machines are big business for us, with Virtual PC starting to pick up a bit recently (especially with VPC6 and Virtual Server coming out).

VMware recently released GSX 2.5, and it smelled a bit of running scared trying to catch up with Virtual Server, which is similar in functionality to VMware's ESX product.

Going to be an interesting day tomorrow :)

One of my hosts, http://www.site5.com, use CPanel 3.7.0-STABLE Build 314 and NetAdmin 1.3-STABLE Build 293 on their site management pages. I can sort out email (POP, webmail, forwarding, etc), subdomains, users, error pages, backups, ftp accounts, MIME types, mySQL (via phpMyAdmin), cron, and quite a few other things too. I've found it very easy to use from an end-user point of view :)

Agreed. Let me know when you're going - I'll head over with you :P

Seriously though, I hope that if any form of taxation is imposed by the US, that the UK (and everyone else) will be excempt from it if, say, we buy from Amazon.com.

When I put that site together, I was just learning PHP, so it was fairly basic. Quite a lot of the required code can be found on www.php.net and www.phpbuilder.com. DevShed also has some good PHP stuff. Get in touch if you want a hand :)

  6. A not-entirely-complete-solution on Net Access on an American Road Trip? · · Score: 1

As a Brit who faced a similar problem over the summer while visiting friends in the US, I knocked up a PHP page that let me submit files and text from anywhere whenever I could. Then I just hijacked my friend's PCs or found a cybercafe. Worked out quite well :)

I find it hard to sleep without the reassuring hum of a computer in the room. Perhaps I should record said noise and loop it on tape if I'm away :)

  8. Re:A much simpler solution... on The Truth About Flourescent Lights? · · Score: 1

I use a slumber-bulb in a lamp the other side of the room (about 4m) behind me. It gives me enough light to stop me falling over things, but doesn't interfere with my work. If I need to see properly around my desk, I have a halogen light to my right on a shelf, angled at the corner - this creates a nice ambient glow without blinding me.
