No.. it's obvious that he was suffering under the misconception of RAID as an alternative to backup. Because he was talking about lost data.. not uptime.. not disk performance.. lost data. What part of this is hard to understand? RAID was invented so that you could get high reliability from cheap disks. It's so that when a hard drive crashes you don't have to take down the service that was being hosted by that drive. You can pop out the drive, pop in a new one and keep running. Shortly after, people discovered nice ways to increase performance too.. but that was secondary. It was never, and it never should be, an alternative to backups. As such, no "retiree" or average consumer is going to get anything out of RAID except false hope because when a drive dies they do not have the skill or the inclination to replace the drive.
Since I'm inherently lazy, I'll post from wikipedia:
RAID is not a good alternative to backing up data. Data may become damaged or destroyed without harm to the drive(s) on which they are stored. For example, part of the data may be overwritten by a system malfunction; a file may be damaged or deleted by user error or malice and not noticed for days or weeks; and of course the entire array is at risk of physical damage.
This is system admin 101 stuff, and shows how far down hill Slashdot has gone.
Ok, for 1, I can't imagine paying anything for a font. So $200 worth of them is just nonsensical to me. Maybe you regularly buy fonts so it makes sense to you, whatever.
That said, nagging you more than once to register is once too many. Once is tolerable. "No thanks" should be the first option.
I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to bcwright who is still claiming that satellites in LEO that have just run into each other couldn't possibly fall to Earth "in such a short time". Gravity is a foreign concept to some.
Can you name any of these virus outbreaks? Have you actually looked at how they spread? There is entirely nothing technical about them that you could blame on operating system security. They're simply people engaging in stupid behavior that they should know better than (such as opening executable attachments).
It's designed to directly compete with Flash. The "problem" that it solves is that Adobe is dominating a market that Microsoft wants. You may notice that most of Microsoft's products attempt to solve similar problems.
Like his sister? Or were you aiming for a non-sequitur there?
So, if I use RAID mirroring and one hard drive crashes, is the data safe or not?
It depends on about a dozen factors.. that's the point.

That's not what raid is for. It's true what they say about a little information being a dangerous thing.

You can decline. Forever.
By declining, over and over again. Wow, what nice people! Seriously, how much battered wife syndrome can you exhibit in one post.
Neat, so you don't even know what RAID is for. Well done.
Think I've had about enough of you, go away now.
So, let me get this straight. You wanna use SATA RAID and you demand it be easy to use. Good luck with that.
Again, you're missing the point. If someone calls themselves an expert, they most likely have something controversial to push.
I'm not calling myself an expert here ;)
Most all experts are peddling a pet theory that they hope will go mainstream and carry them into the history books.
This is common knowledge.
I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to bcwright who is still claiming that satellites in LEO that have just run into each other couldn't possibly fall to Earth "in such a short time". Gravity is a foreign concept to some.
The purpose of Wikipedia is to approach consensus, not truth. The purpose of experts is to forward their own agenda ;)
People who think either Wikipedia or experts are interested in the truth are likely to be confused.
Dude, it's an unprecedented event. Even the best experts in the world are shrugging their shoulders at it. What makes you so fucking smart?
LEO is between 160 and 2000 km.. therefore 600 is in the low end of LEO.
They were in a 667km orbit. That's the low end of LEO.

Fucking cry babies who literally want to trade liberty for security.

Enjoy.
Neither of these do more harm than good.
Ok, clearly we disagree. Do you have an argument to make or not?
Cause if all you've got to say is "is not" then all I've got to say is "is so".
They're charged with being accessories to a crime. The hilarious part of that is there are no criminal copyright infringement laws in Sweden.
That's the most retarded analogy I've ever heard. Even for Slashdot. Couldn't you get a car in there? Come on, try.
When a law does more harm than good it needs to be abolished.
Similarly, please end drug prohibition laws.
ktnxbye.
Even with Silverlight they majority of the demos don't work or work so entirely poorly that they make Flash look good.
