I think what you're describing is MacOS X Server. I ran it for awhile, and found it pretty flawed in that respect. For example, users created with the built-in GUI did not show up in/etc/passwd. Unix is not a simple OS by today's standards. So don't use Unix if you want something simple.
I tried installing Windows 98 today. I failed. Windows is the most backwards, messed up operating system I've ever used. Someone cloning it for "user friendliness" reasons really needs a clue. Go use a Mac some time. Macs crash far too much but they are extremely consistant and very simple. I've moved on from using such a simple operating system but I have no respect for Windows since MacOS has always passed it when it comes to user friendliness and Linux is quite a workhorse.
Want me to back up my accusations? Windows is still based on a command line. It has a very poor desktop metaphor. It is VERY hard to install, an act which requires DOS use and FDISK (yuck). Windows is also based on the DOSism of filename extensions, and though it tries to hide them, they are still there and are as annoying as ever. Don't even get me started on the backslash. Each application leaves behind stacks of.DLL,.INI,.EXE files in all sorts of weird places. On the mac, it was usually just one file.
I am not a Mac zealot. I use Linux and a relitively hackish X desktop, along with Emacs and other cool stuff. I don't think this setup is very user friendly. It's not meant to be. But Windows is just such total CRAP when it comes to being simple that it's not worth cloning. Put your time into making friendly applications for Linux, or writing an operating system that's actually usable (and while you're at it, make it technically good too).
Napster's fan have called for boycotts of Napster. Napster has called for a "buy-cott".Potentially, these could cancel out, resulting in a failure of both proposals. Is there anything we can do to prevent this?
...becuase Miguel is fucking GOD... He knows how do build the best software mankind has ever seen. We've seen this through GNOME and GMC. His software is always fast, well-designed, and bug-free, unlike UNIX. Screw UNIX and use MiguelOS instead.
Miguel, we already KNOW that UNIX sucks. There's nothing wrong with you saying it but becuase some Slashdot editor worships you it gets posted on the front page of Slashdot that you don't like UNIX. Like we really care!!! Well, I don't like GNOME. So, I'm waiting to see "alehmann thinks that GNOME sucks" on the front page of Slashdot. What's taking so long?
What the fuck? I don't think it's even worth responding to this troll. The plain truth is that StarOffice sucks worse than Windows as it tries to forcefully be an OS. AbiWord may not be great but it is perfectly usable (for me) and does not require huge amounts of resources to feed the cravings of its mandatory web browser.
As an AbiWord developer, I can pretty confidently say: No. Things like Word import code can and would be shared but there is no chance of any unification out of these two dramatically different pieces of software.
This is only using the DLL from Windows to decode the video. I shudder at the thought that there may be one day when to use free software with proprietary file fomats you would need non-free libraries from the manufacturers.
Have you ever actually used EFM? It is a lot less bloated than something like nautilus. It manages files. That's it. No toolbars. No dialog boxes. The only reason why it does menus and desktop backgrounds is because it will be merged with Enlightenment before it is released, so there is some duplicate functionality right now.
Well, yes, it was Microsoft that made the computer accessible to non-hackers. There was a tremendous market out there. Someone would have done it. It happened to be Microsoft.
I am sick of all these Slashdot posts claiming Microsoft is responsible for making the computer easy to use. MacOS existed before Windows, and was and is easier to use than Windows. Windows got the monopoly because it grew out of its DOS monopoly. Not because it was a better product. Why do I get the feeling that most people on Slashdot have never used OS's other than Windows and Linux?
The truth is, Windows is a MESS. I avoid it when I can, but sometimes I have a choice between pencil/paper and a Windows machine. The registry is a mess. Configuring networking is a pain and requires a reboot on every change. You need to pay extra money to use multiple processors. The file system is based on 8.3 names and the shell is still based on DOS. The system looks UGLY, compared to a Mac or a Linux box running EFM (drool). MacOS doesn't have these drawbacks, and it was around before Windows and was always ahead of it. So I don't want to hear that MS is responsible for all this damned "innovation".
Check out EFM. I've been running it for a month and it has some amazing innovations, like the typebuffer. In fact, it is already quite usable and easy to compile and install. If you think Nautilus is just another MS wannabe, EFM is for you.
I bought The Offspring's newest CD after downloading their MP3's and finding that I really liked them. I could have spent my money on another CD that I didn't have the music from. I'm glad to know that The Offspring are cool with stuff like this. The only problem is that buying CD's supports the RIAA and their price-fixing practices, which is something I don't want to do. If artists could make their music electronically downloadable for a small fee, it would be very cool.
What's ironic about it? I don't like Microsoft hardware or software and I never said I did. Does it make it ironic because I don't follow the status quo?
YES!!! I would pay $$$ for a ADB->PS/2 adaptor so I could scrounge up the original mac ADB keyboard! That is what I grew up using and it is the only keyboard I can truely love. Control is in the right place, and it don't have no stinkin' F-keys or navigation keys but it does have arrow keys and a numeric keypad. If anyone has one of these keyboards in working condition, mail me! As for the ADB, I'm pretty sure there is ADB->PS/2 (intended for iMacs).
These keyboards are stupid. They are win95 keyboards with penguins painted on them. It is SO PATHETIC that windows keyboards are so commonplace thesedays that people explicitly trying to manufacture a linux-friendly keyboard can't find one non-MS keyboard.
I don't know about you, but my left thumb is on the right side of my left hand. The control key is on the left side of my right hand. This would not be a comfortable arrangement. Am I missing something?
Does Microsoft scare you? This is the same thing. AOL will use their big bucks to give out free/cheap stuff that will be designed to only work with AOL - e.g. anti-competitive. The only reason why they are doing this is to harness a phsycological principal that people don't like to waste things that they have. Therefore, some of them will use the AOL keys even if it means switching to AOL.
I wouldn't think that the URL would be determined by the keyboard... they simply send a keycode to the computer which does what it needs to do to handle that. Just as my Win95 key [:( ] is bound to Compose on my current X setup, these AOL keys could probably be bound to anything on software, and on Linux it wouldn't even be a hack.
Keyboards are used for typing; don't you just want characters in the latin alphabet? Rant follows:
The keyboard I am typing on is useless. It has a resonable amount of tactile feedback, but more would be nice. The thing that really bothers me is the keys. Control is in the lower left corner. Wrong place. No, I will not get a Sun keyboard. Read on to find out why. This keyboard has a bunch of useless crap keys, namely F1-F12, Insert, Delete, Home, End, PgUp, PgDown, Num lock, caps lock, scroll lock, print screen, pause/break and most of all the win95 keys. The windows keys piss me off more than anything. Because Microsoft wanted some ego reinforcement, they have effectively guarenteed that it is impossible for the average consumer to find a resonably priced keyboard without four useless keys with their logos on them. I mean useless literally. Come on, two keys pull down the start menu and one pulls down a contextual menu (we already have the right mouse button to do just that, but I don't see a button to left-click). All of these keys are just legacy crap taking space on my keyboard and making it heavy and ugly. Give me something slick like the Happy Hacking keyboard. The Hacking keyboard is the keyboard of my dreams, EXCEPT it does not have physical arrow keys. For using a shell, editing in a console editor, or gaming, these 4 keys are essensial. It's really too bad - they got everything else right.
I bring this up with miguel every chance I get. Their "inspiration" from MS is one of the reasons why I stay away from gnome when I can. It would be really cool if a group of people who KNEW about good UI design could get together and do something original. I would be happy to help with both programming and design.
I had something exactly the same as this, wireless network and all. I feel it was kind of wasteful since I was sitting right next to a computer on a 100mbit LAN that was even faster and had a better screen. The laptops are pretty expensive, but I guess you could say that they are a good way to distribute resources since not every classroom needs 15 computers at every moment.

Every megabyte they add to their archives will cause the web to grow by another megabyte!
(Note: I know that they won't be stupid enough to recursively mirror themselves, but the thought was kind of funny)
'cuz it's pronounced like that.
This is only using the DLL from Windows to decode the video. I shudder at the thought that there may be one day when to use free software with proprietary file fomats you would need non-free libraries from the manufacturers.
Animations are amazingly annoying, and I hope there will be a preference item to disable them.

The model M's are great keyboards, but they have all of the extra keys that I am complaining about (except the MS ones).

Look for a rant on mice coming soon. :-)
If they let people freely test their products, they might actually get some real feedback.
