I have heard this a hundred times.. Does it matter how one pronounces Linux ?? My answer would be a YES. Now.. before you jump on me let me explain.

Linux is growing. Its "followers" have constat wars is news grps etc about the best text editor, the best windows manager, the best distribution and so on. All healthy. But please, if you are using a software that runs the whole damn computer, you better pronounce it correctly. Let there be atleast two things that we agree upon, the first being that LInux is the best :0

BTW how exactly do we pronounce Linux ?? Linux or 'Lenux' ??

The theory does have some loop holes but on the whole it does sound very impressive.
One question that really haunts me is that if this theory is right, why is it that we don't see so much barrels of oil and petroleum being pupmped out during an volcano eruption. A volcano is the closest natural link with the simmering inside of earth.

Real seems to have landed itself into a big mess this time around.
It is not the fact that they are monitoring people's trends/preferences, but it is the fact that they are doing so without the knowledge of the user. A lot of softwares that connect to internet have some form of ID that can be used to track user traffic etc. But they are publicised. Here evrything is done in secrecy.
This brings to mind the case of ICQ rumour (confrmed?) that it gives back to the server a list of all sofwtares that are on the host computer !

Things have to be looked at in bigger picture. Every network based software has the inheretant capability to send info back to the server and every software has the inheretant capability to do alomost anything on your computer. These two conditions when brought together is an explosive mixture ! Where do we draw the line ?
I am sure that with more internet based applications coming up, cases like this may become more common. Things have to be nipped in the bud.

The following RFC on Portable Network Graphics is from RFC2083.txt.

    * PNG supports truecolor images.

====Can some one tell me .. does this mean that PNG can support animation?? what does "progressive display capability" mean ??====
    * PNG has been expressly designed not to be completely dependent on a single compression technique.
*"Indexed-color,grayscale, and truecolor images are supported, plus an optional alpha channel. Sample depths range from 1 to 16 bits."

    Limitations:
    ------------
    * There is no uncompressed variant of PNG.
    * There is no standard chunk for thumbnail views of images.
    * There is no lossy compression in PNG.

Hope that clarifies where PNG stands

(*) Are you sure of atleast a moderate following ?? It is better not to remain silent and work underground, moving people than call for a BIG Burining session like this and see a flop happening.

(*) Does any one care ?? True GIF is patented.. but majority of people will just stick to it until a situation comes where pple start getting jailed.

    * Rob brought the point of CEO of Sun well, how is it that he forgets the other CEO of other companies other than in IT field.

To sum the above points, IT guys are very intellignet guys, but pardon me they ar enot the only intelligent ones. It is another matter that most politicians are stupid !

/. advocates open source movement. It is rather ironical for such a site to have an _ANCIENT_ version of its own source code published. I know that pple behind /. are ever busy pple, but look at it this way.. one less of those showcase/conferences and we could have easily have had a new version of the code.

(*)I have occassionally submitted some stories to /. and have been unlucky to have all of then rejected :) So from personal traumatic experience I suggest that when a story is rejected, it would be better to give a small reason for y it is done. Nothing big.. a small "repetetive"/"cheap"/"stupid" will do. It gives you an idea why the heck your stories were rejected. Saves you from hear aches u see .. !

(*)Donno if this has ever been done on /. but maybe we can have a thread whose sole aim is to get user inputs and suggestions. Sometimes when u get too involved with a system , people within tends to loose the "outsider" or "outer" view which is VERY important to have.
