I noticed this anomaly, too. Compare this 5x contrast-enhanced crop of the martian jackalope with these antlers. Or is it some sort of fossil vertebra?

If you like playing around with satellite images from Microsoft's Terraserver, try USAPhotoMaps. This (Windows only) software will download multiple images from Terraserver and stitch them together seamlessly. You can also switch between photo images and USGS topo map images.

I just had my Abit VP6 repaired by Gary Headlee, mentioned in the article, and he did a very professional job. He noticed a couple of traces that I had scratched with the back end of a card, and he repaired those for me, too. Turnaround time was less than a week.

I'm sure he's going to be quite busy now, being slashdotted with broken hardware, but you can check out his prices at http://home.att.net/~garyheadlee/services.htm.

Sure there is! It's alpha quality, but it works on this stream and a lot of other sites.

  6. Promise Ultra/66 on Ask Slashdot: IDE Software RAID? · · Score: 1
I recently got a Promise Ultra/66 controller card and it works beautifully under Linux. It's supported under 2.3, but the driver has been backported to the 2.2 kernels (see http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu/server/udma/). I use it with a Western Digital 20.4 GB ATA/66 drive.

The difference in speed while compiling a kernel on this controller/drive vs my SCSI-3 (80 MB/sec) Tekram DC-390U2W controller and a Quantum 9.1 GB SCSI-3 drive is minimal.

The EIDE drive runs much quieter, cooler, and costs only about 1/3 as much per megabyte.
