I have a Compaq 1800T, one of the all-in-one designs. Linux installed flawlessly (and windows did not...even though it has a "Designed for MS Win98" Sticker). I have never had any problems, and it has a Nic/modem combo (a real modem, not a win-modem). My only gripe with Compaqs in the past was not being able to change the insides without a fight, but this doesn't apply to laptops.
Or you could just go small with a Linux IPAQ.
I suck sometimes...the 1800T does have a winmodem (I just never use it). I should have listened to my mother when she said "think before you post..."
