I used to use Alpha's but left the platform 3 years ago because of lack of progress in the development of the Alpha. Especially now Compaq is dead too, the Alpha is a sitting duck. HP already has PA-Risc and and a very good relationship with Intel and their Itanium chip. Too bad!
I'm afraid i have to agree with you this is very likely to happen. But I got one choice left and that is to built my own network. It was done before and was called BBS. Only this time it would not use POTs but WiFi used as packetradio. Also very usable as P2P network;-)
Think of it several thousands years ago (millions if you like)we started with a quite simple society which has evolved into very complex global neighbourhood. And still we aren't able to describe this in any formula. And still there are lots of people who won't fit into it this society. Life is not math but a gift!
It is clearly mentioned that this bill has to do with others then the owner who is installing a videocamera. In certain states it is, according to the article, allowed to install a camera in the bathroom and sleeping room of your neighboors house.
Although i am not in that part of market any more. I 've worked under conditions equal to the safety standard for nuclear sites IEC60880 and the coming IEC61508 as I recall from memory. So take a look at this organisation and their other standards. (www.iec.org)
You can perfectly install Linux on a Alpha using the ARC, I did this 4 or 5 times using the Alpha addendium from Redhat delivered with Redhat 5.x for Alpha. You really needs this companion if you want to install from ARC. It was delivered in print with my distro but it is also present in the doc section of the CD.
And yes it is fun to do, but you should have the full 2Mb L2 cache, to do something usefull with it.
I find it hard to believe that a top notch coder would become a top notch architect. Why? because the different view angle of a coder and a architect.
A architect generally will look at the big picture whereas a coder will zoom into the details to actually solve some problems you won't see in the big picture. But maybe you are the exception to this rule. If so, learn as much as you can about time-management and communications skills because you will not be the first with a burnout at 38.
Working with engineers who actually design bridges I can tell you that a lousy design means a lot of trouble in the building phase of a project. And this are the same problems I face when I have to implement lousy designed software. And this has nothing to do with the beauty of the bridge or the code.
So what is the big deal?
May be I missing the point but...

in my vision the power of Open Source is that people can do what they like to do. And there is no penalty for doing it your way. Whilst coding, documenting etc. for a living means do the it the way your boss wants it to.
In the referenced timeperiod of building cathedrals large construction firms simply did not exists so in general everyone was hired and treated as a qualified individual who was supposed to know how to do his job.
So it was a low level organisation but absolutely not a mob.
Anonymity is a Good Thing as long as there isn't any crime involved. I'm not against the possibility to force an ISP etc to show the identity of an AC when he/she is involved in a criminal act.
But not on the forehand as is happening right now with agencies snooping around in John Doe email because he maybe breaking the law. In the old days your privacy where more or less protected by the requirement of a search warrant before they could enter your house.
Installing Knoppix 3.4 on a HD along with Win2K and XP made my XP installation disappear instantly, so I doubt its Fedora only.

No, they were already hiding in the equivalent of Ch 11 and failed to find new investors and turned today to the Ch 7 equivalent bankruptcy.
