I do understand that software vendors wants to get paid for the work they do, however if an installed software application wants to phone home or send information across the wire I want to know about it. I personally have a software firewall installed on my computer, Sygate in my case but there are other alternatives, that will let me know when a software application want to connect to the Internet. I was surprised to see that there were so many applications that wanted to "phone home". I personally see the ability to control and limit who my computer software applications talks to as a part of my strategy to keep my computer network secure. A software application's ability to phone home will always be on my terms.
I'm glad this happened. I hope it will happen even more often to big corporations and maybe then there will be enough motivation for these corporations to put some political pressure on our politicians to trash our current patent system.
Just wait for the day till an automated computer system sees you as a security risk and a problem that needs to be taken care of and starts harassing you, unfortunately there will be no human around that has either time or interest in fixing your little problem.
I worked on a similar project about three years ago actually looking through pretty much the very same websites.:) The project was finally shut down when one of these websites used an old trespassing law to stop us i.e. saying that we were using the site in a way that broke the user agreement and therefore we were trespassing.
The days of high paid software engineers are gone. You will still be able to make good money if you can on the top of the food chain but the process of using lower paid software engineers is going to continue, as much as I don't like outsourcing it can't be stopped. The world is changing so we need to change with it. Companies everywhere still need good engineers to build their systems for them wether you purchase a comercial system or use an OSS system, trying to use cheap and inexperienced labor is a recipe for disaster.
Just for your information. I in the past called up my DSL provider and asked them to change the reverse lookup to match my domain and they did. Maybe you could do the same.
Another reason why this wont happen anytime soon is that it would increase the cost of software development for companies in US by pretty much forcing them to hire "certified" engineers. I believe this would lead to that even more software development will be done in countries where the cost of getting "certified" engineers is cheaper.
