I do most of my work behind a traditional desk or on a treadmill desk (where I am now). It depends on what I'm doing. I do a lot of different types of work, and I actually find that most of the time I do fine on most things with other people around. My kids are still small and happy with a few minutes here and there, and my wife just likes having me nearby after they go to bed.
I find different developers (and even myself on different projects) do well in different environments. Sometimes I want to be alone, with headphones on, isolated, and sometimes I like having a bit of background chatter. Sometimes I like to sit on a recliner with a laptop, and sometimes I plug it in and use 3 27" displays on my desk. Sometimes I walk and work, sometimes that's too distracting.
I find that I need some variety.
I had not seen this product before; awesome! Best of all, it looks like it could actually be a useful addition to a variety of seating types, not just in the recliner.
Wow, an actual direct response! I have seen a few things like this, but I was thinking more along the lines of a La-z-boy that can be used as a regular recliner when not using the desk; it does seem the desk comes off, though.
+1 for the first actual product linked that answers the question
This is definitely in my list as a "plan B" -- but silly though it sounds, it strikes me that *someone* should have come up with something by now... I can't be the only coder who spends time working on a recliner.
I would just like to give you kudos and thank you for producing the first actually somewhat productive (read: not sarcastic or insulting and on topic to the real question) response to the question posted.
I do have a lapdesk, which I'll likely end up using with something else; I was just getting a new recliner anyway, and it just seems odd that nobody has made one with a built-in desk or something, so I thought I'd see if anyone actually knows of anything.... assuming I'd even see such a comment around all the insults, jokes (which I don't mind so much), and other distractions.
Are you sure you have realistically evaluated this activity as quality with your wife AND children? Just be sure everyone's on board with this!
Note: this is opposed to the original (snarky) response which occurred to me, which was that probably a recliner would not afford significant relaxtion in comparison to a quart of whiskey!:)
Oh, certainly I wouldn't call this quality time with my wife and children! It's more along the lines of "better a little poor quality time than no time at all". I do also of course spend time *without* the computer, but I prefer to be with my family as much as possible. This is for the times when the alternative is not seeing them at all.
Another problem that any physics professor will tell you (after pointing out that "the boys" are not going to be in any more danger from that than they are from your cell phone, since neither would be likely to operate at a frequency at which the human body is resonant) is that any bit of metal can act as an antenna. All it takes is to have one piece of wire inside your laptop that happens to be the right resonant frequency for the power that is being transmitted and ZAP!
I for one would not want my sensitive electronics that can be fried by static electricity in the wrong place to be anywhere near something like that.
it is certainly possible. the t3 uses an ARM processor (not sure which one exactly) and the linux kernel has been ported to arm. The first thing you'd have to do is write a palm program that can probe hardware for you and return the values. I think the t3 has a serial port on it, so that would be a good way to send the output.
The next thing you'd need to do is create a bootloader that would run as a palm program, reset the cpu (mmu, interrupts, etc), load the kernel into ram, and start executing it.
The main challenge would be that ideally you'd want to run linux off the SD card and use all the ram as, well, RAM. It could be done, and there has been some discussion on it, but writing palm apps is such a pain that I don't think anyone has done it yet. If anyone is serious about it, they can get some suggestions from irc.freenode.net #handhelds.org where many people working on ports to pocketpcs hang out.
I have been working with fisherss on this project (I'm Richard), and I thought I'd post a summary of the status, for any interested.
We have a linux kernel booting, but we don't yet have wirless drivers working. USB networking is also in progress. This should go a little faster because the x50 (and x50v) use the same chipset for the wireless network that the ipaq hx4700 does, which is further along in the port.
We hope to soon have a graphical interface up, and I will be trying to load the kernel on my x50 just as soon as I can get the files from Fisherss (I've been gone for a few days).
It will probably be 6 months or so before linux is really usable on this device, and it could be longer before we can completely remove windows ce from the device.
Anyone with low level distribution, drivers, and/or kernel experience who is interested in contributing to the project, we could definitely use your help! We learn quickly, but this is new to us... we just want to get past the limitations imposed by windows ce! =]
Then the problem, however, is that Comcast has provisions in their license agreement that say that you cannot share your connection (they term it "act as an endpoint to a network" or some such, but it'd probably stand up in court).
This doesn't stop many people, but if someone was downloading things illegally, you could at the very least be prosecuted for illegally allowing them access, and maybe even be nailed as assisting or some such.
"You shall be solely responsible for and shall indemnify and hold Comcast and its affiliates and agents harmless from and against any and all claims and expenses (including reasonable attorney's fees) arising out of your use or misuse of the Comcast Home Networking Service."
It doesn't sound to me like he's really at a loss for words.
I could be wrong, but to me it seems more like he's trying to downplay things, because he doesn't want people to see this as a "big fight against the big bad linux people" because that's too close to "big fight against the big bad sco people". Darl McBride wants people to see that to him it's just a foregone conclusion that we should all pay him for our copies of linux.
I am about to install it on another computer... yet I don't feel any urge to pay up. I guess I'm just as confused as everyone else.
Poor microsoft... they'll have to lower the price of the xbox *again*... pretty soon it won't be making money, and it'll just be a big black hole for gates to dump his excess cash into.
I feel his pain... wait, no, that's just heartburn from the taco I had for lunch. =]
Is anyone else waiting to see how long it takes microsoft to sue them and try to get rid of the "clone"?
If it's as close as they say, chances are good it violates a patent or two, or if it doesn't I'm sure Microsoft will find a way to make it violate something else.
Mark my words... the Gates will not be pleased.
Get any of the sony clie series with the full 320x480 screen. this is what I do with mine most. For an ubergeek, the th-55 has a nice screen, a killer battery life (10+ hours when just reading, 6-8 with wireless) and wifi (can you say SSH client?) use palm reader pro.
can't use microsoft reader on palm os, but what did you expect?
Excuse me... this is *not* electromagnetic radiation. You are bathed in that 24 hours a day anyway, since you are surrounded by cell phones, radios, bluetooth, 802.11b, and all sorts of other radio emissions anyway, and it's really not dangerous except at certain frequencies and very high powers.
HOWEVER.
This is just magnetic radiation. Get that? No "electro" involved. just like the poles of the earth, and magnets on your fridge. it won't hurt you any more than walking around with a magnet next to your head for 5 hours a day would.
Electromagnetic is radio frequency. Magnetic sticks to iron and some other metals. Learn the difference before complaining about it.
This isn't for office work; I have a normal desk and a treadmill desk for that.
LOL. Now *that's* what I'm talking about.

I have a custom one that I built; it's great! It doesn't fit in the living room upstairs, though.
I have one of those too -- and I use it! Still want the recliner... =]
Interesting ideas!
... Wow. =] That looks very cool, but not really conducive to operating a laptop without being cut off from the rest of the room

I'm pretty sure it can... I think it just doesn't have as much PC-like hardware, so you can't do as much with it.
