really, you've just reinforced my point. We are familiar with the tech specs of PCs, so we recognise that the X-Box is a pretty nifty games playing machine - probably better than ANY currently available notebook PC, anyway. However, trying to break down the custom architectures of the GC and PS2 in the same way is just a fools' errand. We can see on our screens that the GC often has just beautiful lighting effects, we can see that PS2 sometimes has incredibly fast moving / hugely detailed models and that X-Box games often have gorgeously rendered textures. Does any of this affect gameplay? Not really, and with each consoles' other indisyncratic technologies playing their different roles, none gains a tangible lead over the others.
"Technologically it beats the crap out of the PS2 although the game line-up could be better."
Just because we are more familiar with the tech of the X-Box doesn't make it better, personally I don't really think any of the big three consoles is indisputably more powerful than the others. Just look at games like GT Concept and Ace Combat 4 on the PS2, then tell me again how the other consoles have better gfx. They're ALL worthy systems, but Microsoft should simply not be allowed into this market. trust me, it'll be IE6 and Outlook on the X-Box before long, and Dell will start to wonder who ate their lunch.
don't be a dingus, mirrors don't suffer from chromatic abberation due to dispersion. fresnel lenses/mirrors are segmented, and therefore always imperfect at light distribution. With an appropriate diffuser, it might be good enough for your application though.

Oh no, it's MUCH more insidious than THAT! Microsoft can actually track - in near real time - the consequences of various actions that they take. Say they break msn so that Opera no longer works - just keep watching the graph and see how many people have the current version of opera installed. Say they break IE so that netscape plug-ins no longer work - how does this affect how many people d/l the latest version the QuickTime plug-in.
This is abuse of monopoly power pure and simple - Microsoft's competitors can't dream of competeing with a company that knows the dynamic content of a fair proportion of ALL of the world's PCs.
really, grow up and stop defending the indefensible - as a CLIENt of a company you should expect nothing but the best, Microsoft consistently fucks over it's users, suppliers, regulators and competitors - they don't actually NEED astroturf, it's just that PR bunnies think it justifies THEIR fees.
As no-one in the Slashdot edotrial team has apparently enabled Jaguar's built-in spelling service on their expensive Powerbooks, allow me to assist.
Think of me - if you will - as a kind of human spellchecker for people too lazy / stupid / carefree to enable the spellchecker service that already undoubtedly exists on their PC.
"in coorperation with"
should, of course, read
"in cooperation with"
some people even like to hyphenate cooperation, but they're nothing but a grammatical lunatic fringe.
As far as I'm concerned, the only positive things about the X-box are any good games that happen to get written for it - even though they would have almost certainly been released for other platforms had the X-Box not been released. many still consider Halo to be the X-Box's finest hour, and we KNOW that would have been released for both PC and Mac (and quite possibly PS2) if MS hadn't bought out Bungie.
Talk about a fucking Trojan horse! The only thing worse than lovers of free software drooling over the next MPAA blockbuster is them buying X-Boxes because Halo is a fun game!
Yeah, I'm grumpy about MS taking over the world, why aren't you? You can either fight the Nazis or be enslaved by them - it's your choice.
I have server and client side spam filtering now, dealing with (at last count) around 40 unwanted emails per day. HALF are Korean, most of the rest are like the above. 2 or 3 make it through to my inbox. I actually get about the same amount of spam as legitimate email now - how fucked up is that? I fear that you're shooting at a moving target, I really think that the only way to slow spam down is by charging per message sent - I'd gladly pay a penny per message if it would stop the bulk emailers.
10.2 may be optimised, but it's still about HALF as quick as OS8.6! 9.2.2 is BLAZING fast by comparison, the folder hierarchy is more logical, the spatial finder is much more customisable (for productivity).
Now I use 10.2.4, and I won't be going back to the instability of OS9, but I can't help but wonder just how great Copland could have been.
the MacOS was good because it was designed by people who CARED. they cared about efficiency, user feedback and aesthetics. MacOS is such a creaky UI because it's in the business of capturing users from Windows, so it aims to emrace UI conventions that they're familiar with - Apple seems to think that this is the way forward, I think it's a step back.

Don't buy Microsoft products.
I totally agree - I've actually taken to fliping mine down at night...
thanks for that, I'll sort it out
how do you make time to do so much posting on Slashdot? You must be working really hard over there, or is it just school holidays?
how did you know about the gerbil?
just coz you don't know the quote reference, doesn't mean you have to demonstrate your ignorance.
suck my pretentious cock

how impatient are you people? A site is NOT slashdotted just because you have to wait 20 seconds for the server to fill your request.
Oh yeah - this isn't a "flat LED", it's a neat little package of LED light mixer and reflector - it looks like a really nice product.

Shut down Microsoft now.
you've not heard of the BSA, then?

tell that to GWB and Donald Rumsfeld
see what I mean?
aargh!
that's what I get for using Safari - that's it, I'm re-enabling Omniweb as my default browser - this own-pitard-hoisting has got to stop!

nope, IN THEIR FIELD I think they're actually worse.
maybe a "Springtime for Microsoft" musical would do the trick...
"following the lead of a big company with lots of usability research?"
oh, you mean Apple!
I think it might have something to do mwith the mirqacle of perspex
really, how stupid can you be? how confusing are windows for a person like you?
well.... that's coz it's an X-Box.

...not when I looked after 35 comments, anyway.
maybe you aren't prepared to wait more than half a second for the server to fill you request ?
oh yeah, the mod? Nice neat job, certainly better looking than an X-Box case - but it's still an X-Box, and now it takes up 3 times as much space.
Eeeeewwww! Microsoft!
anyone who knows ANYTHING will tell you that Sun will expand to become a red super giant before collapsing to become a brown dwarf
are you ignorant or what?
are you currently residing in the secure unit of a mental health evaluation institution?

pointless question - buzzword compliance is at issue here, and today's buzzword is "tabs"
