so, I don't put windows on the internet. who does?
So, have a linux box which DOES NOT route and is locked down to the best of your ability. Run SSH and let it do X11 forwarding.
Install rdesktop on the linux box.
SSH to your host, rdesktop to your windows server.
I do this over dialup, various DSL, through VPN
beautiful and simple.
I was hoping someone was going to mention the administrators/users of the software. When are we going to accept responsibility for our actions.
Would you build a house with wood you knew was actively rotting? So often I find systems configured with default settings.
I do not pardon the software devolopers, OSS or MSFT for releasing sofware before its time. These things are like wine, they are complex and take time to get the right. Further with the wine anaology, I expect that my favorite restaraunt is not storing those wine bottles in the sun.
I am trying to avoid delving into the technical garble of all of this, but some blame must reside with proprietors of business systems. Some blame must reside with the systems engineers and administrators that are not doing their jobs.
For the longest time, I felt like I was not working enough, because I spent two thirds of my day reading newsgroups, watching skript kiddies, reading vuln-dev, and all the countless bugtraq posts. Now I realize this IS my job. Being aware of caveats and faults in the software and finding solutions is my responsibility.
How does it not work for you. I have a fully implemented AD schema. I have file sharing for Windows, Mac, and Nix running. I have samba and appleshare IP.
OSX sees it all. I can mount SMB, mount NFS, mount AFP.
