well, email is one thing, but when we all get a regular dosage of spam, that is quite different. Then again, real mail (assuming we can see the analogie and make the bridge) isn't much different. Everyday, i get loads of spam. I guess the only thing left is to think of ub3-1337 ways of filtering and getting rid of spam. A guy I know thought of such, and it appears to be working: senders that route their mail via the server are logged (as usual) but the trick is, that if someone sends a given amount of mails in less than a given amount of time, the server denies the client the right to route the mail. pretty cool if yuo ask me. The only other alernative i have seen in the past are the traditional spam filters that people comlain to to get spammers posted and filtered, but this method works for new spammers too WOOHOOO!
also, is there any way to block certain IPs (manually that is) from sending yuo mail?
It really depends on what type of machines yuo are talking about. if yuo are speaking of PCs, the companies are the LAST to buy them. As soon as the 1.4GHz t-bird came out, my buddies and i were the first to buy it. H4rd-c0r3 Gamers and techno-geeks are the first to buy the newest stuff, including CPUs. Companies wait a while until the CPU's become cheaper-- still good but not as expensive as the top-of-the-line stuff. For example, the 1GHz duron costs $32. Also, they wait for companies like DELL to have clearances so they can stock up on, say 100 1GHz desktop DELLS. that makes them perfectly happy.
I remember the day when Legos made technics, sets that included gears and sprockets, springs, pneumatic pumps, and other such mechanical wonders. I used to always play with those. What i didnt quite understand is why they stopped making those? They seemed to encourage more imaginative thinking, becuase yuo could build more than just a city or a star wars ship or something of the stationary and inanimate. The technics sets allowed kids to use concepts such as gear ratios, pressure (pneumatic pumps) and other concepts which introduced phyical concepts of motion and dynamics. especially when the sets started adding motors, so that all those fancy cars with steering could actually move by themselves. I remember that there was a set for building a car (with most of the parts) NOW THAT'S LEARNING!!! god, any mechanic could have used that as a child. Then Legos stopped making the sets. damn was i pissed!
Once an english teacher told me that kids are being dumbed down...he said a test that he gave 10 years ago, today's kids would all flunk. Reflecting back on lego sets...i see his point. now they programmable (yay! go digital gadgets), i have nothing against that...but what happened to the good old stuff.
I guess i am just nostalgic:-(
.
hehe, once my friend tried putting a voodoo five on a 200MHZ comp and played some games with it. Oh dear. anyway, keeping on topic though: technically you are mostly right, but i am comparing to the other 85% of the market that uses computers just for word processing; compared to that, games need a LOT more.
Not everyone has cable or DSL?
well, technically yes, but the average ping on online games has gone WAY down. most people actually DO have cable or DSL now. In games like CS, they are beginning to add features that rely on lower pings and higher bandwidth, so even all yuo people who still play those "old 56k friendly" games might be shit out of luck anyway.
Hmmm, sounds like they are trying to catch up to neocron. funny if they would release earlier... neocron is getting pretty "popular" even though it hasnt even been released yet (WOOHOO! go NFF), and blizzard is obviously seeing all the hype about the new MMORPG scheduled to be released only in 4-6 months. There is obviously already a trailer for the game, and a beta. Now all the people who led clans in CS, can spend all their time posting on neocron forums and requesting bullshit requirements of their clan members like
at least X posts a week (i mean GOD DAMN!! the game's not even out yet!);-)
What are people these days using computers for?
What drives the market for high speed chips?
--Games; That is what people are using windows for; if a chipmaker can say that their chips are
specially designed for l00nix, then people will buy it, and start using l00nix more. The main problem with this trend is the fact that a windows user cannot at this point in time install and use l00nix like windows: stick in the CD, and sit back and relax for a while while the OS installs. l00nix is great for tweakers, hackers, and just plain h4rd-c0r3 people, but it is not ready for
the general market, it is TOO custom. If tweaked enough, it WILL work on just about any configuration and system, but that is not good enough for gamers. If someone went the extra step and made l00nix more usable to the general public (I love it, I use little else, but i LIKE to tweak), THEN we could blow windows away...
(although admittedly, GNOME is a good start).
I am not saying making it necessarily more windows like, just more available in terms of usage. However, chipmakers starting the trend for "designed for l00nix" is most definetely good.
Although i can understand how battlebots.com might want to have battlebots.org just because of the domain name resemblance, doesnt mean they should have it. If there are two people with the same name, say John Smith, and they both want johnsmith.com, who should have it? for example www.billgates.com was available...(until microsoft bought it)...but they bought it, didnt advocate for having it! hmmm, story: battlebots sinks lower than microsoft! there are no laws regarding domain name preferences, especially.orgs.
