Um, doesn't sound like they redesigned anything to me. Sounds like they left their USB1.1 controller alone that they know works and has worked for years, and designed from scratch their USB2 controller. That makes perfect sense to me.
I don't understand your logic. Intel puts in a USB2 controller, and that says 1394 goes away? That don't jive...
