Fat binaries are great for the transition phase, but don't do anything for old apps. If I just started my DTP company and plunked down $7500 for various software packages, I would not be happy to hear that none of it will run on the next Mac I buy. Just as they emulated the 680x0 on the PowerPC - which is still available under Classic - they would need to emulate the PowerPC under the x86.
"It is amazing how many people still believe that PPC is vastly superior to x86. (and yes it is x86 and NOT 386). What exactly do you think a PPC can do that an x86 cannot?"
Altivec, for one. x86 has nothing that compares.
"The IBM CPUs cost them a bundle"
The CPUs cost a lot less than you think.
"and plus Intel has the capacity to produce huge amounts of CPUs while IBM doesn't."
Oh, please, you're talking out of your ass.
"Also IBM being so huge and going in so many directions..."
So, now they're too big? Make up your mind.
"...does nothing to promote the CPUs that they make. On the other hand Intel does a great deal of advertising and this will help Mac a lot."
Why should IBM (or Motorola, for that matter) advertise a a microprocessor to the general public? The general public is not their end customer, and Average Joe can't go into Radio Shack and buy a PowerPC chip.
Intel, on the other hand, does sell their chips directly to the public (which is why they still come in the expensive but electrically-inferior PGA package), and so advertises like they do because they need to convince the public that their processors are better than AMD's. If AMD didn't exist, Intel wouldn't have those Blue Man Group ads.
Face it, the average person running an Office application suite doesn't -- and shouldn't -- care what sort of CPU is under the hood.
"1) Intel chips are NOT cheaper. Any difference is negligable (sic)."
"-- Which it? Not cheaper or is there a difference? Here is a intel Pentium 4 540J Prescott 800MHz FSB 1MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - Retail. $213.00. Show me a comparable CPU from Apple at the same price."
Um, you're an idiot. Two reasons:
a) Do you really think that any hardware vendor pays retail prices for their CPUs or for any other component?
b) It's not like you can simply buy a PowerPC chip and plug it into the socket on your motherboard. Unless you've got BGA re-work equipment, fuhgetaboutit.
"you probably think clinton was a great president too"
I believe that Clinton had the potential to be a great president. That potential energy couldn't be converted into kinetic because it was wasted -- he was constantly defending himself (and his family, and his administration) against the wingnuts who could not stand him and who were doing everything in their power to destroy him.
"kerry lost. and it wanst cause of fraud."
Look at it this way: the SEC considers it fraud when a corporation (read: Enron, WorldCom, etc.) lies to its shareholders. Quite clearly, and contiuously, Bush has lied to the American public. He's lied about his reasons for invading Iraq. He's lied about the need to "reform" Social Security. Ergo, he's committing fraud.
"I think what's far scarier is that the country that Timothy McVeigh and Ted Kaczynski come from doesn't have this restriction. They're able to go to US universities without licenses."
The Unabomber was able to TEACH at universities without a license.
"Why do you have to be so freaking politically correct? I understnd in real life, it pays off to be PC. But on Slashdot? What's the payoff, except for the karma?"
If you weren't a fuckwit, you'd recognize the difference between being "politically correct" and being "factually correct."
El Cubano's statement -- "NEWS FLASH: The USofA is home to the majority of terrorists that have attacked abortion clinics and is the source of the financing and ideology of right wing militants." -- is an example of the latter. And recall that prior to 9/11, every incident of terrorism on US soil was perpetrated by a red-blooded born-and-raised American.
And yes, I absolutely consider attacks (and threats of attacks) on abortion clinics and providers to be terrorist attacks. It's rather hypocritcal for the right wing to not condemn such incidents as terrorism. Of course, given the fact that they can't decide exactly what is considered terrorism, no suprise there. Recall that recently the government had to upwardly revise the published number of attacks that occurred during 2003 ("Oh, that's terrorism? Really?") and they didn't even bother publishing the number of incidents that occurred during 2004. It's hard for fucktard Bush to stand up there and say, "We've got the terrorists on the run" when all evidence is clearly to the contrary.
"Could it be that the NEA is behind the 'license foreign students' push in some way, and corporate America is behind the 'give everyone that wants one an H1B' push?"
Do you mean "National Education Association" -- the primary- and secondary-school teachers' union?
If you, I think you're off your rocker. The NEA doesn't represent college- and university-level faculty and as such it doesn't have a dog in this race.
(Having said that, I would imagine that a majority of graduate-student teaching assistants would join the NEA in a heartbeat if the option was available to them. (Actually, they'd really like to join the Teamsters -- more muscle there, if you know what I mean.))
"I do web programming. The fact is, Opera is less compatible with IE in terms of Javascript and rendering than Firefox. Firefox is almost 100% compatible with IE in those respects."
... and IE compatibility is good why? Appeasement and/or acquiescence never got anyone anywhere. Except down the road to hell.
"We don't need any more tools to spy. We need some fucking national legislation to curb the uncontrolled police state that exists inside the corporations of the world."
Not gonna happen, seeing as how the US Gov't is rapidly becoming a police state controlled by those very corporations.
" Also, we find it best to fire people on Fridays. Studies have shown there's less of a chance of an incident."
Completely wrong. The person fired will spend the entire weekend stewing and trying to figure out how to get back at the company.
Get rid of them on a Monday, and the fired person has the opportunity to get ahold of headhunters and others in order to get the job search started ASAP.
"I almost puke when I think about how much I spent for that diamond engagement ring! Seriously. I was really on the fence, but it meant a lot to her, and I suprised her with an artificially-overpriced gem!"
You should have done what I did -- I gave her my grandmother's engagement ring. Heirlooms are the way to go. Fuck DeBeers and their "3 month's salary" bullshit.

re: socket issues. There's a reason you don't see hardware that includes IC sockets any more.
It's because DIP sockets SUCK.
You can fix those machines by removing the sockets and soldering your memory directly to the PCB, like G-d intended.
Computer cases should be hidden out of the way. I built my PC in a rack-mount chassis, which fits right into my Middle Atlantic studio furniture desk. This way, it takes up zero desk and floor space. The USB 2.0 CD-RW sits on the desk near the monitors, and I've got USB cables plugged into the back of the machine and brought up as a little bundle. There's no need to even look at the front panel, except maybe to turn it off.
I've been using them for years. I can't use a regular mouse at all -- they just drive me nuts.
And those who don't know how to fucking spell.
Whoops -- wrong thread, dude.
Oh, good, so maybe he'll stop polluting the airwaves with his ill-informed rants and get off the radio!
"he is the biggest name in talk radio"
I thought he was the biggest ass in talk radio. Or maybe it's that he has the biggest ass.
"and when he does something, others are sure to follow suite (sic)."
First, learn to spell. And, yeah, all of those right-wing talkers are all just lemmings. I'm waiting for them to talk themselves right over the cliff.
Altivec, for one. x86 has nothing that compares.

Clearly, we have, as indicated by your spelling and grammar.
... that Agilent didn't sue them, seeing as how Agilent's line of oscilloscopes is called Infinium.
So, explain to me how your c^HGlock will solve your problem if you have a heart attack.
Yep, you really do.
bogus. Send a free box full of the cards over to the developers. The hardware vendors should go out of their way to support the developers.

You don't have a Ph.D. because you don't know how to use apostrophes.
I would hope that they'd have a discount for print subscribers.
