This is pretty much the problem in todays society. We have abdicated the responsibility we have toward our children and forced them to "handle life themselves." The fact of the matter is that we are born wild animals. There is nothing genetic about civilization -- without gentle guidance, reasonable rules and education, we will grow up to be large animals from the little ones we start out as.
It is far too easy to blame TV, technology, computers and guns. These inanimate objects don't talk back. The fact of the matter is that without these accoutrements, uncivilized animals will simply use sticks, rocks and their bare hands to kill one another.
The slipper slope starts with our failure to deal with the real problems -- we are becoming too greedy, selfish and materialistic to remember why we are raising the families that we are placing in daycare, schools, and ultimately in the hands of poorly-paid strangers.
Don't blame technology. It has an "off" button. The blame begins with ourselves.
