Wow! You went to RPI too? I figured I'd post a reply, not to dispute or in any way detract from what you're saying, but to show that some Dot-Commer's ended up "making it."
My career path seems to have started out much the same as yours. I went to RPI for two years, and was lured away by a startup. I was never very impressed by the CS program at RPI (indeed, I'm not very impressed with CS in general, so maybe it's not the school's fault), and found the opportunity to make some decent money while putting some "real world experience" on my resume too good to pass up.
I spent a good chunk of time at the startup, and ended up leaving, not because the company was going down, but simply because I was bored and needed a new challenge (and I'm an average slave to the big $). With a fair dose of luck, I landed a very nice job at a very big company (outside the US even!), and have never looked back.
One of these days I may indeed return to school, not because I _need_ more education (or even because I particularly enjoy school), but to
get into a different (and more challenging) field.
Well, good luck with your remaining years at RPI. Hopefully those huge donations will make it a really kickass place (though they'll probably be doing construction until you're out of there...).
Off topic, what's up with the UFO EMAC building? I used to take naps on the hill facing downtown Troy during the summer... It was probably my favorite spot in all of Troy. I can't believe they're even considering destroying it.
