Canticle is one of the finest books ever. The sequel a disaster. I had to force myself to keep turning the pages in Wild Horse Woman to see if any embers from the original Canticle still glowed. None survivied. I was rewarded for perseverance with but a horrid after taste that still darkens my memory of Canticle.
Not having read the Patent, I can say that the technique described here on/. was taught in my first programming class in Australia in the spring of 1983. If it is not prior art, it is certainly public domain.
