  1. The More Interesting Thing is... on Build Your Own Computer · · Score: 2, Insightful

People don't get their hands dirty anymore. It's a lost art- children (admittedly before my time) use to fiddle with electronics, take things apart, build something new. There was a lot to discover, a lot of flexibility. Components could be coupled together in very different ways. Now, when a kid tells me he's built a PC, big whoop- he stuck some boards into slots, plugged some cables in. What's missing, and may stunt future growth- are products that can be disassembled easily- and rebuilt or modified... I once built a record player out of cardboard, wax and and an old motor. It palyed good for about five minutes, but then went up in flames. I learnt a lot from that- but if I start to build something based on a current digital tech it's impossible- my stereo is one chipboard- what can kids do with that? The future of science depends on us being able to make new areas exciting and visible to kids- quantum mechanics and splitting atoms remains impossible for 5 year olds. Congraulations to this guy- he's done a good job- but please, think of the children...!

  2. Re:Wish sony would release it on SD or CF on Sony's Memory Stick TV Tuner at CeBit · · Score: 1

It's not just MS- it's the whole collection- Minidisc (which I use myself, and love, but find it to be a pest when they start releasing CD players which play unprotected AAC files whilst I have to put up with a "booking in/out system") plus the blatantly brilliant betamax, Mavica Mini CD's. Heck, these are the people who thought a 3 1/2 inch floppy would be a great idea for a digital camera. Memory stick duo, Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick is three too many Sony. Quit the game, don't do the same with DVD's, and please, please, please just buy another format. I love your cameras, I love your laptops. Just use SD or CF and make my future a cheaper and happier one!

For those with any emotional attachment to the guy- "!!! THIS IS NOT MY SERVER !!! " is indicated on the bottom of the page (I must have managed to get it pre- /. effect)... So thankfully his drives won't be causing a smoke effect large enough to fill a stadium... For what it's worth the only picture I managed to download looks like three great big sticks with a couple of hard-drives on top of each other in between the sticks (look something like a surreal altar to the god of IDE Drives). Not exactly enthralling to me (obviously not got enough of a life). And the question that really must be asked (Budha may have the answer)- space is as good as it's content... Maybe he could run a server to help the poor sods affect by the /. effect...

  4. Been there, built my own... on Dual Screen/Display Laptop · · Score: 1

Sorry guys and gals, but I've already been here and do all that. Had two laptops rigged together, with both display inwards, but used a smaller laptop with keyboard as one side of the book (see ASCII style illustration)... Words surprisingly well, but weighs too much. It's not new tech, but if the interface should not be a standard desktop one but a seriously enhanced system to allow better multi-tasking... the hardware's cool, but the software will make/break it. ___ ___ | || | | || | |key|| | |___||___| Conclusion: Niche Only! 5. It doesn't take a big author... on What Makes Great Science Fiction? · · Score: 1

I think RIM/MIR/CHI by Alexander Besher deserve a mention. Yeah, the endings are a bit rough sometimes, but you can't do much better "cyberpunk"/mystcism (rekindled by love for Gibson's world too).

  6. Making it 3D on Walk-Thru Virtual Environment · · Score: 1

It may not be 3D just now, but it strikes me as amazingly simple to make it into 3D (although some one can no doubt prove me wrong)... if you walk through the stuff, all you need to do is layer it... create a grid on the floor, and switch various "jets" off... that way you can at least a similar effect minority report style 3D projection... Easy. "Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain." Lily Tomlin
