Hehe, after looking a bit on your site, I wrote my own little perl script that answers back on such requests. Hard to tell if it works, I don't really know what to expect - although when I seem to get the whole IIS binary back, I'd say something went wrong on the other side. Lol.
Anyways, I don't have lynx on this y2k machine, but I do have apache, so I made a version of your SSI thingy in perl. Thanks for the tip.:)
Hopefully I bug someone into fixing their server...
Well... yeah, to people that are running (professional) web servers.
No to normal users. ISPs should however actively encourage people to Not run IIS. Windows itself isn't nearly as big a problem, and I wouldn't like my ISP to tell me what OS I should run. Some good advice and reasons why I should pick another web server, however... that I would probably appreciate if I didn't already know.
Well, that was their take on Code Red (and all the other MS viruses), in their press releases, right? "We have saved the internet, and the world from the evil viruses!".
Not a word on who created, not really the problem, but the possibility, as usual.:)
There was even a term, wasn't there? Something like MSTD - MicroSoft Transmittable Disease or something... anybody remember?
Yeah. If you turn that on, it will warn you that.txt files or.gif files are potentially viral, while letting through.doc and other formats that are "known" (lmao) to be safe - or rather, MS formats.
Actually, it is such a stupid check, it almost makes things worse instead.
Exactly.:) I'm on W2k partly, also, and I wouldn't either. Sorry for the me-too post, but just because you are sorry enough to run windows (like me), there is no reason to be stupid on top of that... like running IIS.:)

If you are gonna nitpick, do it right.:) It is kinetic energy in other subtances than air too.
... copyright (or copyleft) is what FSF is all about - keeping software (and text) free by making sure noone else can claim it for their own and make everyone pay.
Although it seems strange to copyright a small text, it at the same time immideately gives Everyone the right to repost the whole text somewhere else, such as on slashdot. This had not been legal otherwise, or at the very best very doubtful.
So. No hypocrisy. The exact opposite, and pretty smart if you want it to be spread around...
"one of the things that always pissed me off about dealing with MS was various NT bugs that would just sit for years at a time."
Nah. You are thinking of Apple. MS release with a lot of bugs unfound, but they are pretty fast in fixing them. Of course, they should find them Before release to deserve any credit at all.:)
Maybe I am a bit too cynic here, but really... all those softwares are most probably installed a long time ago, and if they aren't in some places, what would you expect?
No authority of those kinds will ever care about the average Joe if they want to do something, whether for good reasons or not. They will just do as they please, and if they overstep, they apologize and throw us a scapegoat. Meanwhile, it is business as usual...
I agree... and even if you are forced to use outlook, it behaves unless you are outright stupid.
And moreover, I'm tired of seeing those posts everywhere, where they are Not needed. If you really feel so hard about this crusade, why don't you tell the people that are Unaware of such?
Ah yes. Scoring cheap points by cheering for the home team...:)
Want me to tell you what the Real culprit is? All those management morons sending small little "funny" or "cute" AVIs or flash games... those are the ones that will dbl-click on Any attachement, and those are the ones likely to send an attachement that you should dbl-click. (Mail-rule: email from X with attachement goes straight to trash).
"How about we concentrate on replacing the poor quality non-free software with free alternatives..."
How about we replace to poor-quality *free* software as well. It seems as numerous to me. People seems to think that "As long as it is free (and sometimes GPL:ed) it is good enough no matter what it does". No, it is not.
True. Perl is really fast when written correctly (not much to that, just don't make new regexpos every other line hehe).
The only thing that makes perl slow is the overhead at the start of the script, and since many perl programs, cgi and others just starts, performs a task, and then exits, you have to figure that in. Sadly.
However, a running perl program, or one implemented in mod_perl etc can compete with the best of them.
I'm just now playing with the new release, Opera 5. It is so great... all that is missing far as I can tell is some IE-dependant javascripts... which shouldn't be needed, but all you web developers (yeah, you) are using them because they are "cool".:)
Anyways, opera is free if you agree to have an ad in your top-right corner. It is more than worth it - mozilla can go hide... they lost it a long time ago, open source or not.
And boy is it fast and stable... and since it has email and icq clients built in, I'm moving fast into being able to drop windows altogether, which will be a must as soon as 2k isn't keeping up anymore. I am not moving to the gummibear OS no matter what...
No matter what wizardry i can possibly do, or whatever I could make my mom do during supervising, she will not ever choose Linux. And I can not recommend it to her, either - my honest recommendation Is MS, for the average user.
Linux users and developers usually focus on things nerds can do, not what the average user can do. Before this is corrected, Linux will not make it out of the server closets (where it does a good job though).
Well, anyways, my mother wants to put in a CD, then start the OS that installed itself, and then she wants to surf some portals (sigh) and read her email without having to wonder what the h*ll a partition is on the way. Is that so hard?
And really, this would be possible without me losing the command line capability, right?
In a way, they do, don't they?
Basically, they ask a lot of people do you agree with answer (guy) a, or answer (guy) b?

Funny how americans actually seems to think that is true. :)
Well, anyways, RMS goes a bit too far maybe, he usually does, but as always, he has some validity to his points that are hard to not agree with.

I would love to telecommute.
But at the same time, you are absolutely right. I simply lack the discipline to do a full week of work when I have a TV right beside me...
... that it is because they do this stuff, ad revenues are going down?
