Perhaps many of you already know this, but something similar happens with encription algorithms. You cannot export an implementation, but the algorithm is free for all to view. So all you need is some brains and some spare time.
I think that most of those rulings where born out of paranoia than from racional thinking.

I think that "don't help them because they're crap anyway" line of tought is one of the best ways to keep them being crappy.
I agree M$ IS an arrogant monopoy, and most of the time they market products aimed at a public for whose opinions they dont give a Mexican 5 cents coin (and being Mexican I know exactly how cheap that is!).
BUT if we people don't like their products because they suck, and given the oportunity to have them improved we don't take it, methinks we are giving up on our right to complain about how bad that garbage is.
Yeah, they might not credit you. They won't even admit there was a problem at all. But if they fix it, and it is not there in the final release, the world will be a little bit closer to being A Better Place (tm).
I think it is funny how so many people talk about the future use of computers and completely fail to link it to current trends and developing technologies.
My take: it will combine the strenghts of both paradigms and combine them into just another mind-devouring monster. Take the utter lack of thought and knowledge needed to watch tv, with the hability to tailor and customize to nearly any extent that is possible in the net, and you could be able to build the perfect vending machine.
"But how to take away the complexities of using a computer and turn them into something just as easy as tv?" you might ask. Do NOT try to explain that with current technologies, remember we are talking future trends here. How about an inexpensive machine, capable of basic speach recognition.
"Computer, goto mtv", and voilá, my personalized page would start bombarding me with my favorite video feeds sided by oh-so-may specially targeted ads, based on statistical and personal information gathered from my past usage and that of whatever consumer group i happen to fit within.
Want paranoia? How would you like that the videos were recorded in two or three different versions, with the one being "narrowcasted" to you (it's personalization, remember?) including the patterns that better match your previous choices?

Ok, this are my $0.002 (sorry we're on crisis). You said: I argue that Vader/Anakin is not the boy wonder Brin makes him out to be. I argue that he is simply responding to the events around him, just like most people do.
Putting aside all fanaticism, one has to agree that Lucas asks way too much of his audience by feeding them this "I'm so special that I BUILT A VERY COMPLEX AND EFFICIENT AIRCRAFT ALL BY MYSELF AT THE AGE OF 6" (or whatever age the kid has).
Ok, some of us have built robots (whithout any intelligence, of course but--- hm, hold a second, that's just like 3PO...), thinkered with computer peripherials or programmed (or all three), so why wouldn't young Skywalker be able to put together the droid?
But how many of you out there not only compete in your local F1 team, BUT are also able to build one from scratch utilizing stolen spare parts, AND make it so good that it beats the hell outta Ferrari. And DON'T say it's not an overstatement about the kid being The One (tm).
What's my point? Just that there is a thin but very noticeable line dividing a resource used to underline a character's "uniqueness" and using cheap tricks to force you to accept that same special quality of his. And Lucas made a huge leap over that line. Just as he does with several other elements.
IMHO, and I think many may agree on that, the third colon on the movie title should be "Could Have Been A Lot Better".
I loved the special effects, the plot yet I cannot find. But, while it is true that SW's got more holes in the plot than a Grouyere cheese, it is also true that it's vastly changed the way movies are made since the very first one. So, let's learn to accept and excercise criticism.
