I wonder if anyone has ever seen someone making copies of a newspapers, and giving them away to its friends. The answer is NO. If you want today newspaper, you buy it, because is cheap, and people don't care to copy them to save some cents. And my question is, why are music CD's so expensive? Are musicians more qualified/important than journalists? The answer again is NO.

My question then is who is stealing here?

    Cheers.

  7. Other ways of cracking on Cracking the Smartcards · · Score: 4, Interesting

You can build a hardware device called Season2 interface, which allows you to plug it into the decoder, and then plug the smartcard into the Season2. This device has a serial port conector, so you can connect it to the computer, and then "sniff" all the traffic between the card and the decoder.

Here in Europe, Canal Satelite uses the SECA encryption, which is absolutely cracked. Applying some bugs of the existing smartcards you can create a "masker key", which is a kind of "root" account in the card. When you have created this master key on the card, you are ready to add providers, channels, buy pay per view events and a lots of interesting things.

Also there are lots of emulation software you can program into some pics (16f84, 16f876) and build a smartcard (piccard, piccard2), so you are able to watch all channels for free with these cards.

  8. All open source programs should do that on Netscape 6 is Spyware? · · Score: 1

This could sound kind of crazy, but I just got this idea into mi mind:

What about Mozilla, Konqueror, Galeon, having in Preferences an option called "Help to the community getting banners". If you check this box, sometimes (you could adjust the time) you would get a banner from Mozilla sponsors, so you were giving money to the devealopers in an easy way. And if you want, you can uncheck that option and you dont get this banners. I would use that option, and thousands of people would, if they were sure that this money is going to support these applications, the FSF, etc.

Think about every time you start kde or gnome, a banner loads in your desktop. This way thousands of people would be giving money to the open source community. Of course its *very important* that you can disable this "feature" whith the options, but Im pretty sure that lots of people would have this option enabled just for helping the community.

I think its a good way to get funds for the open source community.

  10. Re:Why Columbus discovered America on Chinese Explorers 'Discovered America'? · · Score: 1

    1. Europeans believed the world was flat

Almost everyone believed the world was flat.

    3. Columbus wanted to prove Europeans are stupid

Did you mean were stupid? XP.Anyway, he wanted to prove everyone was wrong. I'm pretty sure you knew the world wasn't flat since you were born, but some people was tought about that.

    4. Columbus wanted to get rich. Absolutely.

    6. because Europeans and Columbus were both wrong and stupid, he is credited with discovering America. Even though the name was coined by Amerigo.

Americo Vespucio realized that those lands were a new continent, so those new lands got his name. But Cristobal Columbus was the one who risked his life to prove there were lands after the atlantic ocean. He didn't put his feet on America for the first time (native americans did), but he showed it to the rest of the world/civilized world/Europe for the first time.

If that is a correct interpretation, then I ask "why are we arguing over who is more stupid?"

Not everyone know everything like you do, that's why we need some smart people to "discover" things.

  11. Why Columbus discovered America on Chinese Explorers 'Discovered America'? · · Score: 1

When Chinese and maybe Vikings went to America, they were just sailing and got into these places, but no one told them before arriving that those lands didn't exist.

In the other side, at Columbus time, everyone though the world was flat, and that at the end of atlantic ocean there was nothing. They thought that if you navigated Atlantic ocean to its end, you would go directly to hell. Europeans made maps of the world, and there was no America in those maps. Did the chinese or vikings made maps of the world? They didn't.

Columbus believed that the world wasn't flat, so he could reach "Las Indias" (east-asia) in a shortest way crossing the atlantic ocean. So Columbus with three boats full of (crazy) spanishmen did this hazardous travel, when everyone thought they were going to die.

In fact, when Columbus arrived there, they thought they were in "Las Indias", they didn't know they discovered a new continent, just because a mistake in Columbus' calculations. Columbus died thinking he went to "Las Indias".

It was after a while, when they knew that was a new continent, and then they included this new land into the world maps.

That's why he "discovered" America, because no one believed that there were lands after the atlantic ocean, and there was nothing after the atlantic ocean in world maps.

The evidence for Bin Laden's involvement is well-known. He has means (hundreds of millions of dollars, thousands of followers), motive (he has repeatedly said that he wanted the WTC to come down. His group bombed it 8 years ago, and has performed synchronized attacks in the past.), and opportunity (19 known followers of his were on the plane, and flight manuals in Arabic were found in their rooms).

Yeah, but, where did you get that information? Did you see it by yourself? You can't say you are 100% sure about that, just because the government told you so. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in that stupid conspiracy idea, but, there are some things kind of weird. Like: "OK, let's destroy the WTC, and do the biggest terrorist attack in history, let's leave the car at the airport, and don't forget the flight manual (in arabic), because I need to have a last look to the crashing-planes-against-buildings chapter."

I'm not saying they are doing bad, it's just I don't believe them 100%. Think about it, what would you do if you were in the NSA? If you have a suspect, would you tell it to all the people and to the CNN? And guess what, isn't it such a good idea to tell all the people you are behind some kind of suspect, when the truth is you are behind someone totally different? This would make the real suspect feel safer, and would increase the chances of getting caught.
