  1. Past it's prime on Facebook Will Now Ask Users To Rank News Organizations They Trust (recode.net) · · Score: 1

What do I care about what 10 million facebook users think about what I want to see? They went from being a great way to keep in touch with your friends to the equivalent of an ongoing job interview where you better not say or like the wrong thing. I give them 5 years and they will be joining the ranks of AOL, Yahoo and dozens of other internet giants.

  2. Re:This will linger for decades on Now Meltdown Patches Are Making Industrial Control Systems Lurch (theregister.co.uk) · · Score: 1

Agreed. I've worked with a lot of these systems. And most companies connect them to their internal network because all the PLCs are network ready. The funny thing is most of the controls PCs don't talk to any corporate resources except possibly for authentication. (even then the users typically all log in to only one controller account). I'd bet in 90% of the cases an isolated network switch and a few patch cables solves their problems.

This cat is out of the bag. There's little point in debating the ethics of it. Once the technology exist, and it already does, it can and will be abused. No matter how many countries say "we won't do it" it will be done. We may as well have them because as sure as the the sun sets in the west someone else will.

  4. If there aren't enough jobs in the future that's the way it is. We innovated ourselves out of the need for vast amounts of manual labor decades ago, now we've innovated out of a need for unskilled labor. The fact is that there are too many people for the few jobs of that type left. We need to start having fewer new people. Especially if you can't afford them. That seems to be part of the solution that no one wants to even contemplate. But it's the only one that addresses the issue long term. UBI will work until it runs out of money, and that time will come. Then what do you do with everyone?

  5. Older Chips? on Intel Says Chip-Security Fixes Leave PCs No More Than 10% Slower (axios.com) · · Score: 4, Informative

According to their chart, he oldest CPU they tested is 2.5 years old. Giving that some more proactive businesses have a 3+ year retention rate on hardware, "older" is hardly the word i'd use.

Or more likely a CEO that gets fired by the shareholders/board of directors so they can bring someone in who will replace them.

Machines are getting cheaper. You better have skills that put you as far down the obsolescence line as possible.
