So how is there a "coming bandwidth shortage"? The only way there is a bandwidth shortage is if 1. They have oversold their networks (not my problem), or 2. Have shitty engineers (also not my problem). Why should I pay more for their mistakes?
But your attitude is juvenile. Afraid of getting cooties? Of catching TEH GAY?
When someone is attracted to you, you should take it as a compliment, because it is. There are several reasons you might find such a thing repulsive, and almost all of them reflect badly upon you.
1. You lack empathy.
2. You have not explored your own sexuality, possibly because you are afraid of what you might find.
3. You are a true homophobe.
4. You have the sexual maturity of a 12 year old.
I'm speaking from personal experience here. In my early twenties, I found myself having the same reaction as you, and not liking it. After some soul searching, 1, 2, and 4 were true for me. I'm now a happily married father of two, completely comfortable in my own skin, and flattered beyond measure when some guy still manages to find my fat ass attractive. Some day, you may miss the attention.
So if someone hides a body, he should have an increased jail time (not a decreased jail time for eventually disclosing the location of the body)?
Yes. Destruction of evidence.
If I fudge my books to embezzle money, I should have an increased jail sentence over someone who just takes the cash and makes no effort to not get caught?
Yes. It's called fraud.
There is plenty of precedent in our legal system for this. I'm not really sure where the outrage is coming from.
Using a web proxy to post anonymous information on a forum or web site is NOT sophisticated
Nor is it illegal. However, I take issue with it not being sophisticated. It is something the average internet user can't spell, much less understand why they need to use it. It may not be sophisticated to you, but to my dad it is fucking magic.
I think the EFF does a lot of good things -- but their PR blurbs tend to leave out enough critical info that I am beginning to dismiss them out of hand.
Agreed. This is the second press release the have made in two weeks that was completely over the top.
1. This case involved a "crime" committed using a computer. I know personally if I was put in charge of investigating a computer crime, I would seize every piece of magnetic and writable optical media I could find in the suspect's possession. Doing less would be incompetence.
2. This was from a search warrant application. Not every cop is computer literate. This is worthy of a few snickers, not a front pager.
The truth is that for the last 15 years the ISPs have been overselling their networks. It's simple math - if I sell 100 10 Mbps plans, I need to have capacity for 1 Gbps. But, since the majority of customers will never use that bandwidth, I can oversell. So instead of building up their capacity with the over 200 billion that the US government gave them to do so, they pocketed the profits while making token efforts to roll out broadband to rural customers.
Now, the equation has changed. People are starting to use the bandwidth they have been paying for, and a lot of that use is completely legitimate. ISPs are going to run out of capacity soon. They have to find a way to discourage people from using what they paid for, so their profit margin isn't eaten up providing what they contractually agreed to.
So I say fuck 'em. Fuck them in the neck. It's time we regulated those bastards to the point where they can't take a dump without permission. Municipal fiber to the home, baby. Only way to go.
No it isn't. The graph scale is in years. Obama has been in office weeks.
I understand you butt-hurt Republicans are dealing with a major electoral loss, but you guys have been completely over the top the last few weeks. You Surround Us? Please. Get a grip.
I spotted my 2-yr old do this the other day, hard but not so hard as to provoke screaming. He spent the next minute carefully proving that it was hitting his head on the table that had caused the pain, and then hitting it again a couple of times very gently and then a bit harder to see when it hurt. I was astounded at the level of reasoning going on as he worked out what had happened to his head and how it had been caused.
Your kid beats his head against the table and this is a sign of intelligence? Sounds like you have a future Republican.:)
This comment is probably far too old to reply to, but:
Atheism is the belief in the non-existence of a deity. Lack of evidence is not the same as contradictory evidence. Therefore, atheism is a belief based on lack of evidence. The truly rational position is "I don't know". There is no evidence one way or another, so you can make no conclusions based on logic.
As to provably false:
If we are going to talk about God, we have to define what we are talking about. Usually, that definition begins with some attribute of the infinite. You can make an argument that God is not infinite, but most people would say that you are no longer talking about God at that point.
Once you clear that semantic hurdle, try the mental exercise yourself: assert *anything* about something infinite. Then try to come up with the counter. You can do it, every time. This is why philosophy of religion classes will define God as infinite, but then caveat it immediately after by stating that this topic will not be explored. You literally cannot have a philosophical discussion about God where you do not ignore the infinite-ness. This is the main reason why I left the field.
I'm a smart guy who really could have benefited from more tracking in my education. My brother is an administrator at one of the best high schools in the city. We once got into a debate on tracking. His response to my arguments really scored:
Tracking students has huge negatives for the kids who get mapped into the lower track. No matter how dumb they are, they are generally smart enough to figure out they have been lumped in with TEH STOOOPID, and once that happens, it is only a matter of time before they start living up to your expectations; academic performance goes down significantly.
When I countered that not tracking impacted the smart kids negatively, he fully conceded the point. And here is where he closed the argument once and for all:
"These kids are smart. They don't need the help. They're going to turn out fine."
I'd have to lose 30 IQ points before I'd try an RTS on a console. The only people I know who think HALO is a good game are the ones that have never played Half-Life. Do yourself a favor; buy a PC, and try a real RTS.
Try having hard disk failure someday. The fact that I can rebuild a system, log into my Steam account, click a few links, go to bed, and wake up with 15 games installed, patched, and ready to play, cannot be beat.
Steam Cloud is promising to be even better. All of your saved games are stored on Valve's servers. You can log into your Steam account from any PC with internet access in the world, and within an hour, be playing one of your own saved games.
Frankly, the most of the people I hear complaining about Steam are pirates, and I say FUCK THEM. If you actually pay for your games, Steam's service is unbeatable.
As a religious studies major, I can provide the reason: a literal interpretation of the bible was used as justification for slavery. That's where it started.
Not true. Speaking as an agnostic, I can tell you the real definition:
An agnostic believes that it is impossible to talk about divinity in terms comprehensible to humans. The argument goes like this: if there is a God (generally defined as an infinite being/force), then the existence of such is so far beyond our understanding that it is pointless to try to say anything about it, as anything we could possibly say is provably false. Describing the infinite limits the infinite, because it is, you know, infinite, so therefore you can't say anything about it. An ant has nothing intelligent to say about the stock market.
I personally believe that this is the only truly rational position to have.
Not at all. My opinion of the situation is just like yours - irrelevant. The cops can get away with it because it is legal, not the other way around. I place no moral judgment about whether it is "ok" or not. I would strongly advise you in any interaction with the cops to not rely on what you believe is "legal". "Legal" has little to do with the laws on the books, and everything to do with how it is implemented. Murder is illegal, but that didn't save civil rights workers in the south. Those killers got away with it because the people who implemented the law made the actions "legal" by not pursuing the cases. If you are a sh*thead, and everybody can see you are a sh*thead, then we *encourage* police to beat your ass down, and no one will do jack squat. That's what cops are for - keeping the peace.
Get outraged all you like, but any legal system is implemented by people, and people choose how to exercise their power. This is why you should avoid pissing them off.
"Probable cause" is easily claimed, and almost never disproved. Bottom line is, a cop can pretty much arrest you with impunity. I suspect a real lawyer would advise you not to test your theories.
Totally untrue. Disorderly conduct is, in fact, a crime. Whether you believe she engaged in disorderly conduct or not is irrelevant; your opinion doesn't count for jack squat. In a DO charge, it is basically your word against the cop's. Guess how that typically turns out?
And of course, there is absolutely no possibility whatsoever that your daughter was really screwing around, and used going to the bathroom as an excuse.
So she got written up? Big deal. Whether she was lying or not, the lesson that "you come straight back to class no matter what" has been imparted; no harm done.
Get this through your head - the police do not need a reason to arrest you. Being an asshole is sufficient. Or the officer having a bad day.
It is a sign of childhood to challenge the rules. It is a sign of adulthood to realize that the rules don't apply to the people with guns. Don't like it? Get a gun.
Spanking shouldn't be the only tool in your arsenal. I personally believe that it is an invaluable lesson to learn that your parent is willing to hurt you. Really makes you think about what "or else" might mean.

C. regulate them until they can't take a shit without permission since they have proven to abuse their monopoly.
Yes. Destruction of evidence.

No, it isn't. It is about being able to monitor all sigint traffic at once, looking for the "bad" ones.
I understand you butt-hurt Republicans are dealing with a major electoral loss, but you guys have been completely over the top the last few weeks. You Surround Us? Please. Get a grip.

No, you shouldn't necessarily be arrested for lying to an officer. You also shouldn't be surprised if it happens.
And of course, there is absolutely no possibility whatsoever that your daughter was really screwing around, and used going to the bathroom as an excuse. So she got written up? Big deal.
