Currently, both sides do their darnedest to keep us in the dark. I think there should be a randomly selected citizen review board for anything that gets censored. It should rotate annually also, one person from each state. Give them a stipend and make them server.

I also think mandatory voting is a great idea. Our democracy requires everyone to make a small sacrifice, right now we are building it on the backs of the poor and middle class despite the rich's bleating about how much they pay.
They haven't paid anything near the cost for the specter of power that stands behind them and enforces their legal ownership and contract law in general.

Garnishing someone's tax return is not feasable for the majority of debts. I'm not sure if it's even possible for a federal return, outside student loans and debts to the government. Some states allow you to garnish a state tax return.
You can absolutely be arrested for failure to appear on a civil court case, even small claims. I sued someone afew years back and went back and forth with them multiple times. They were smart enough to show up every time I could have had them held in contempt.

In my jurisdiction, for an average person, you have to sue them and pay filing fees, then appear and get a default judgement, then file to collect your default judgement. If they don't show for that, you can get a "body attachment" and they will have an arrest warrant issued. If they have an interaction with the police, they will be arrested and held, usually until they cough up some percentage of the debt.

This process takes a long time and is difficult for a person to follow through, I ended up settling the debt after 3 or 4 months of court appointments.
Companies with can keep hounding you and if you miss the right court appointment you are SOL.

To pay my rent I do 1 of three things.
    1. Mail a check (cost of stamp)
    2. go to the post office, swipe my debit card and get a money order which I then mail to my landlord. (cost of stamp plus money order is $1.50, benefit is USPS debits my card instantly instead of watching for a check to clear).
    3. PREFERRED - log into my bank website and enter my rent amount into a box for the payee (landlord). Click submit. The bank then mails a check to the landlord. This debits from my account semi-instantly and is no cost to me. For some reason my bank hold these if I submit them on Friday and they process on Monday. This also takes afew days, so if I forget to do it on the 1st, or there is a weekend between the fifth and the first, it will be late.
    I'm in the US.

As to your comment about jealousy, I think that's mostly projection. Alot of "wealthy" people do it so they can feel better then people around them. Having people jealous of their money and trying to "steal" it though taxes feeds into their sense of self worth.
In reality, we don't tax people because we are jealous, we tax people because their the ones with the money.
