Purchase a WRT54GL (not any other WRT54G, unless you know what you're doing) and install the Tomato firmware on it. Not DD-WRT, not OpenWRT or any of the others. Tomato has better QoS and Traffic shaping functionality than most commercial firewalls I run.
The reason why Lighty and Litespeed have pulled better numbers than Apache is because they are threaded and use FastCGI, and always get compared to Apache with the prefork MPM using mod_php.
The latest performance numbers show that Apache 2.2 w/ worker MPM (threaded) + FastCGI can keep pace with Lighty and LiteSpeed. Many of us large site maintainers prefer Apache's feature set.
I agree that APC rocks, it outpaces Eaccelerator in a big way, and is more stable.
This article is not worth the read, I could condense it into a 3-fold pamphlet. Performance tuning is an art, this article does it a great bit of injustice.
Just because you're running Windows 98 and have an old compromise doesn't mean you're totally out of luck about the audit trail.
If this company has been compromised by a targetted attack and a motivated attacker, this gal may still be "in", having moved on to better jump hosts with better TCP/IP stacks. This can still be traced, and evidence for prosecution may still be gathered.
Otherwise, pray that it was a non-targetted attack (a worm, a botnet sweep, etc). And pray that it is not a California-based company.
