I don't think the pendulum is *that* regular - I'd claim the presidency represents the current state. '80 brought things back to the right, '92 back to the left, 2000 back to the right. Was '76 that far left ? And if we're pitting one set of commercial interests against another, it'll move quite fast - about as fast as $, which these days is just a bit slower than light.

Here's another wacky theory - in a truly Orwellian world, music/movies would be free because the interests would use that as the carrot while we were being reamed in real ways, like giving it all up in taxes to the military-industrial complex. So we're lucky to be complaining about these rights. 'Course, I do want them!!!

I believe public policy is a pendulum that swings back and forth between positions on issues. Give the democrats what they want for too long, and there's a right wing backlash. And vice versa. So, instead of fighting it, give them the SSSCA, as flawed as possible. Then wait for a good backlash to set things right. It will happen - the commercial interests of Intel and hardware makers (and I think someone pointed out that Sony is more in this camp) will ensure that. Afterall, the USSR discredited anything valid in Marx's theories...
