I live in Canada. Other concerned people live outside the US. How can we put pressure on the US patent office (re: this)? Or the US government (re: DMCA)? Or the US court system (re: DOJ vs MS)?
I'm sick and tired of not being able to do things just because I don't live in the US. It affects me, whether or not I live in the US, and therefore I should have a say in what goes on in the US.

Pretty soon, schools (and therefore taxpayers/students) are going to have to start forking out more money for hard drives, because school-related media will no longer be compressed. We'll all have to store our long lecture soundtracks as WAV instead of mp3, for fear of having it deleted. The same thing will happen to better view compression, etc.
Most of us bitch, most of us complain, but nothing seems to happen. Why? Because the average Joe who doesn't even care about tech-related issues allows the government and large companies to do whatever they want. Whether we like it or not, we're a minority, and we should really organise, already - form an international union.
Many of us work in tech positions, and our employers, and thus big companies, could not run without us. If we threatened an international, national, to regional strike, things would change quite rapidly. Boycotts are not enough; we don't make up enough of the buying population. But we do make up much of the tech population, and we could use that to our advantage, if we could pull ourselves together and form a union.
This union would be different from many unions. Elections would be conducted over the internet (via GnuPG), and membership fees would not be mandatory, as this would limit the number of people willing to participate.
It's time to act, people. Someone should start a web page, and a discussion board to get this new Internet Union together. It is possible, but it will have to be done right. If anyone is interested, I will elaborate further on some of the difficulties we must overcome.

Think about it. We've said before that all public agencies (government) should use free software wherever possible. I believe France did it (or maybe that was Australia, can't remember), and now, so did China. What's to complain about? Let's all remember that world domination can still be achieved, even if the only country that would refuse to adopt something based on emotional grounds (the US) isn't the first one on the bandwagon. Europeans will use Linux soon enough (they simply want the best products; think PAL vs. NTSC, or GSM phones), and so will other people, and the US will eventually follow suit, communist-supported or not. (I wonder what would happen if there was a news report that said communists drink water. I wonder if some USers ("Americans" include all people in North, Central and South America) would stop drinking water, just "'cause that's what commies do.")
The Chinese government wants to use Linux because they think it is, or will soon be, much better than the alternatives. I support this movement.
BTW, Linux has already achieved its critical mass of developers/users needed to keep it running despite political pressures (would YOU stop developing for/using Linux, just because of some media hype that says "it's a commie's OS"?), so the question of "will this hurt Linux" seems more and more absurd.
