You're right... but for the first 50 years of television, they were 4:3. Oops, I think my age is showing. I was born before the advent of HDTV. :-)

  2. Re:Does anyone really prefer 16x9 instead of 16x10 on Does Anyone Really Prefer Glossy Screens? · · Score: 1

Yes, I really meant "16x10". This was the most widely implemented widescreen aspect ratio before the 16x9 craze began a year ago.

The most common instances of 16x10 are the 22" 1680x1050 and the 24" 1920x1200 LCD monitors.

I like widescreen better than "TV" (4:3), but I like 16x10 widescreen better than 16x9 widescreen (too short).

I hate glossy screens, too. But I hate 16x9 computer displays even more.

Why would a corporate notebook PC or desktop LCD/LED monitor need to be 16x9 instead of 16x10?

Does everyone just watch movies all day, every day?

    Good luck,

The status "FAQ item" is only appropriate if the answer never changes. The fact that it has been discussed before does not mean that it should not be discussed in the future. Every time it is brought up new people will be exposed to the issue. People who have seen it before might have changed their opinion on the issue. My personal opinion is that open-source software will only succeed when a sufficiently large number of people agree to stop forking projects for spurious reasons instead of putting their effort into improving the existing first- or second-most popular project in a given category.

  8. Re:Trinitron on Shopping for a New Monitor? · · Score: 1

Mitsubishi's "Trinitron-like" CRT is called Diamondtron, not Trinitron.

Mitsubishi sold its computer display group to NEC (http://www.necmitsubishi.com/), but you can still find Mitsubishi products in the distribution chain.

It is difficult to recommend a single manufacturer, but I think Mitsubishi Diamondtron NF CRT monitors are the best.

    My advice,

    1. If you want an LCD, look at dot pitch and not screen size. (1280x1024 in 18" diag. looks like crap).

    2. If you want a CRT, aperture grill is much better than shadow mask unless you like dim, dull, and blurry displays. I have no idea what the people who complain about the stabilization wires are seeing. Most people forget they are there unless reminded.

    3. If possible, buy from a brick-and-mortar store where you can return or exchange without restocking fees or shipping charges. This is especially important for CRT monitors because of their size/weight and unit-to-unit performance variability.

    4. Look for a long warranty. Good monitors have three-year parts/labor/CRT warranties. Crappy monitors have 90-day labor warranties.

I don't fear organized religion (although the abuses of the Catholic Church and other church-like cults are truly disgusting) as much as I fear the current ethos of "the bottom line is the *ONLY* thing that matters". The US FCC just ruled that it is OK for the telephone companies can sell information about *WHO YOU TALK TO ON THE TELEPHONE* to "marketing affiliates"!!!!! It is technology that enables these and countless other privacy invasions, not religion.

  11. It is really simple... on Moby Says Techie Fans = Fewer Sales · · Score: 1

... copying copyrighted music is theft. It has a thief (you) and victims (the artist, distributor, retail store). Just because current computer technology makes it possible to copy music CDs (or software, etc.) does not make it *legal* or *right*. The rationalizations that it ultimately helps the artists merely illustrates the current moral and ethical bankruptcy og our cultures. If it helps the artists then the artists will *choose* to release their music with a copyright that permits distribution without remuneration (for those vocabulary-impaired readers that means "available for free").
