Scary stuff!! hehe.. I wonder which cult group will be commiting suicide tonight... (astronomy can do some funny things to people.. remember the comets a few years back..?..) Miss Cleo will be busy.
I'll be outside in my backyard, sitting on a lawnchair in the snow, watching the night sky... The Quadrantids meteor shower, (also called the New Year's Meteor shower) is going to be going on! Quadrantids tend to have a very sharp peak time, so the high rates also don't last long, only for a small number of hours. Because of this, it is a really hard shower to catch - you need to have night for those hours! If you can catch this shower though, it is very rewarding! This year, the peak time is about 18 hours UT, so North America is not favored for the peak itself,..(figures..) but I can still observe the rest of the shower. (it peaks on the 3rd, by the way.)
So I'll be freezing my ass off, looking for some shooting stars (which I probably won't even catch) in 10 degree weather with some cheap coffee and a blanket. Yes, I'm probably an idiot for doing this... no, I don't care what you think. Astronomy rocks! Happy new years everyone...Ü
