  1. Is this the "I kiss you" guy? on Promote Your ATA66 Controller To A RAID Controller · · Score: 2

People who were in on the IPO won't get burned, but anyone who's buying it now at $250 might be. Of course, that's what I thought about RedHat, and it's gone nowhere but up.

The trick, of course, is to sell it just before it plummets back down to a reasonable price.

  4. Biologically, this is the goal, right? on Genetically Engineered Children · · Score: 1
I think that when issues like genetic engineering are brought up, it is important to realize that we inherently desire to produce superior offspring. Some would argue that we have emerged from the state of nature and entered society and are thus not bound by the rules of nature, but I don't believe that is the case. What mother or father wouldn't want a gold medal athelete or a Nobel prize winner?

Is genetic engineering going to far? How far will parents go to ensure the superiority of their offspring? Does anyone remember the woman in Texas who killed a girl because the girl may have won the beauty pageant instead of her daughter? What about the thousands of Chinese girls who are killed by their parents because they would rather have a male child?

I believe that when genetic engineering becomes available, every parent with the money to afford it will be lined up ready to make the best baby they can make. Look at the parents in GATTACA, after having one child the natural way and comparing him to his peers, they decided to have their second child engineered. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

    2. How does Disappearing Inc. make email safe?

Encryption: All email messages are encrypted before they are sent to make sure that they can not be intercepted and read.
Authentication: To make sure to make sure that the sender and the recipient are really who they say they are, a user identification code and password may be required.

Tracking: A complete audit trail is maintained for each message, indicating who has received the message and when they first read it.

Retrieval: Using the email client of their choice and the plug-in from Disappearing Inc., users can decrypt and view any message that they are authorized to access.

Deletion: Finally, at the end of the message lifecycle, Disappearing Inc. Universally Deletes(TM) the message from the local PC, the mail server, and backup tapes so that nobody can ever read it again.

    ------------------------------------------------ -

So it looks like you can "use any email client you want" as long as it is one that they have a plugin for. I suppose if you use another, then you just can't read the mail. The last line about deletion sounds especially interesting, I assume that "deleting" means destroying the decryption key.

I agree that this is a win-win situation for them and they are getting free assistance, but your intentions seem almost hostile. I'm not thinking of them getting free testing for their product as much as I am thinking of their realization that internal testing isn't enough. And I think that it's very hostile of you to ask that companies and individuals get W2K installed and operating on all of their systems before we "put MS in their place" by finding an exploit after it's release.

Once again, I don't like MS more than anyone else, but I see this as an important change that will produce a better product. Forget the monetary implications, it shouldn't matter to us whether they lose money or make money as long as the OS gets fixed a bit.

  8. Re:Anti-Microsoft for no good reason? on Microsoft /asks/ "Crack this machine" · · Score: 1

They'd probably acknowledge "the Internet community", but it doesn't really matter because we would know exactly who helped them fix their little program. I think that this is a good chance to show that we rally not behind a particular piece of software, but rather the concept of "good software". I mean, honestly, if W2K (or any software package) can be made better by the efforts of those who know how to make it better, then isn't it worth it?

  9. Anti-Microsoft for no good reason? on Microsoft /asks/ "Crack this machine" · · Score: 5
Why do I see so many posts on here complaining because Microsoft is trying to get "free auditing" by asking everyone to attack their machine? Doesn't this fit entirely with the concept of Open Source? They're requesting assistance and criticism from the community rather than keeping it entirely closed. I mean, it's not handing out the source code, but it is a step in the right direction. I mean, shouldn't we all be happy that Microsoft is at least TRYING to improve their product before they release it rather than just giving us another piece of crap?

If you don't want to help Microsoft out, that's one thing, but you can't deny that this is better for the hoards of people who will be running this thing.

  10. Re:Great Offer on Red Hat IPO Surprise · · Score: 1
Another important thing to note is that IPOs are not usually offered to anyone who would "sell at the end of the day". Redhat is looking for people to buy their stock ang hang on to it for a while, because even though they only get as much money as the opening price * outstanding shares - a bit, the higher their stock price is, the better off they are. This is the reason that an IPO isn't open to everyone in the first place.

I just want to make sure that no one out there thinks that an IPO is quick cash in the pocket. If Redhat's stock does well, then the chance to get in on the IPO is a gift. If Redhat goes bankrupt, then it's a curse. Just my two cents...
