More wasteful is the extra power needed for all of the set top converters required for every analogue TV you own. If a converter unit draws around 20Watts and you have 2 or 3 TV's in your house then you are looking at 40-60 watts of power (the same as a standard light globe) running 24 hours a day. I dare say that most people would not turn the converter to standby. So this "new" technology will increase our global warmining.
Most of the converters I have seen here in Australia connect via the AV inputs of your TV. So for older TV's that don't have the AV inputs, you also have to purchase a modulator.
