As far as I can tell, my Apple TV 2 doesn't do subtitles on Netflix. My Roku 2 XS does. That may make your decision for you.
That aside, the Apple TV has a more consistent interface that is less likely to confuse non-tech-savvy users like your grandparents.
The VIC-1600 VICMODEM was 300 baud. But it was the first modem under $100, came with $200 worth of subscription time for CompuServe, The Source, and Dow Jones. Sold over a million units, and got a lot of us connected to other fellow geeks via local BBSes from our basement bedrooms. I used mine well after I had a C64, until I finally could afford the 1200 baud VIC-1670 to run my own BBS.
I hear it even came with a Commodore-branded phone in Canada, because it was designed to plug in to the handset jack of a Bell telephone.
