First boot always goes to the desktop hmm? Why do we want this? Think about this, if we allow them to be lazy and boot with GUI like windows they will use it and they will learn nothing. Do you want to be the one in the irc channel explaining to them about console or what xterm really is? I sure dont. Unix varients are ment to be stable right, well turning it into one big GUI mess isnt gonna help that path any. Yes i realise that you said a "choice" but you know, if we offer the user EVERYthing there will be too much bloat, it would be like SuSE ;D When i first started in linux I used Mandrake (eck) and it pretty much told me "Use GUI!" and I did, I remember the GUI login and i used to think "hey tihs is cool" Until i realised the whole new world of the linux console *ominous overlude* I am 10x faster in console than any GUI, and far more productive in work and in learning. As for linux being a game? Well, Sure anything can be considered a "game" windows script kiddies consider DoSing poor deffenseless and innocent people a "game" but is it? You dont HAVE to upgrade or tweak anything. The reason opensource is great is because so many people can work on 1 projects code and discover new bugs and fix them when possible, can you do that in windows? Not much at all that ive seen. the Unix mindset is far superior to Windows in a Business world. As weve seen in past slashdot articles Windows barely fixes its long list of security holes =] at least our OS tries to keep us informed and safe.

this is why shit like Oreilly's is great for a temporary solution to people who have money to toss around on books. They have wonderful books IMO as i do have a couple. Oreilly's actually take notice to inform you as if you dont know (which isnt this the point of trying to read a doc ?) Man pages arent all that need a good change. aside from documentation being outdated and somewhat useless they arent always the most descriptive of text. Maybe some type of standard is necessary for man and doc alike? One thing is sure, we would all like better and current documentation, so what are we going to do about it? Well, first we need more people to write these documents. Maybe send revised man pages to the projects maintainer. I personaly dont care about some new project, sure maybe it will be useful in the longrun, but right now we need people WRITING! otherwise any kind of website will be nothing less than useless. Its up to the author to license it. Did you find something wrong with it and its not free to edit? email him, its as simple as that. Stop saying "stop belly aching" or "quit whining" and do something. We arent asking for much, but some people would really like to learn including me. Whats it all for anyways? sigh...

The comic styling of this guy is quite hilarious, but the lighting on that isnt done very well. Is there anywhere with a parts listing and instructions on how to do this. Now im off to find a somewhat dusty Atari to prevent any further alarming !

on a more serious note, competition does stimulate a better product. Involving them in our affairs might not be something thats wanted but maybe they can help increase quality of services. Doesnt that sound like the ideal outcome to you? Kinda reminds me of open source in some aspect. We have more people working on one source and more problems are discovered and fixed. Perhaps involving them in some way might be our best bet as of yet, but how can we involve them without them overstepping their bounds =] Maybe its not, "should we involve" but how can we involve them constructively and wisely. In my opinion if we dont suggest any good ideas, we are damaging ourselves more than keeping everything nice and private. If we tell them what we want/need now perhaps it will make them feel important, and still benefit us as a whole. So putting "leave us alone" aside, what should we ask of them?

I could still go for some gummy bears though =\

Ok I could be wrong but has anyone noticed on those posts ANYTHING from Branden Robinson that didnt have some uber hacker wannabe slang in it? just a little curious as to the intellectual integrity of some of the people involved in the distro ;D

Why is it that people even care. I wonder, what is it going to bother people if anything is ported. I dont think its quite made for them to use now is it? If you dont want to use something DONT! Maybe someone NEEDS windows for something. Like i believe it was an earlier slashdot article about spell checkers and linux. Editing atm is superior on windows, why use windows the way it is if you can use apps you like. Just like wine, some people want the stability of linux but like some windows apps. Why are we being so close minded. I dont want to hear any "oh its M$ cra..." Think beyond the box, realise that not everyones needs are the same as yours. This does not show my personal opinion. I personaly think its a waste of time and everything should all be on some type of unix varient =] but its just no rational to think this will happen. We need to learn to deal with this, and bringing linux to windows in more ways than one is a step in the right direction.

Just about everyone out there knows how hard and strenuous(on the wallet mainly =]) shopping for a geek can be. We all seem to have a fascination with hi-tech gadgits and such, but why does it have to be that? For girlfriends/boyfriends/wives/husbands why not start off by cooking a dinner or something. Making a day special is a gift all in itself. And maybe a nice little gadget or 3 =] but it doesnt need to be based on that. How about things the he or she might need. and then add a bonus with something that will make them drool. If your looking past that and your ONLY talking about things you can wrap why not take a look at some of the newer hardware out there. It might be more cost effective to go with that instead of a 400 dollar gadget, not only that but youll still have money to spend on other things if you find that perfect gift at the last minute, you wont be grabbing at your hair screaming "Why oh why did i spend so much!" That is unless your only shopping for one.

I realise this, hense why i brought that up. I was responding to another post where someone ranted about how he wants distros to stick with one WM so they can be (special) or some rubbish. My only problem with slackware is they dont put bb for a choice in there =P I think separating distros should stay in possibly setup applications like pppconfig or linuxconf. Some people like GUI setup some people like console, so I chose slackware where i can do everything i want without ever even having to install X and a newbie can go into say RedHat and use GUI setup utils. This is just fine, lets keep it at that and let the user decide the WM NOT the distro =]

That post had no real relevance you realise. You do realise that is full opinionated right? I quite personaly hate Window Maker. Maybe its fast, but blackbox is faster. And I dont need all those things floating around my desktop. Maybe its configurable but why waste my time when blackbox is how i want it already? Not to mention theres Ion, maybe a little less "pretty" but it gets the job done. blackbox has been the most productive for me, WindowMaker has only slowed me down, and Ion made me even faster. And to respond to another post up further. Why would a distro want to tell a user what to install? Can you say WINDOWS? My god man, the beauty of linux is choice, you have so much to choose from your bound to find something you like. If you really want someone to support non-newbies(lazy people as you have obviously made every one of them out to be) then Windows is there for you in all its gloriousness. Not every newbie would want KDE or Gnome. And to just force something apon them is counterproductive in the learning process. I for one want people to be more informed of linux not dissillusioned.

Well actually, I deal with helping people on a few irc channels for linux problems. the biggest problem occurs with RPMs. Sure they may be newbies but they can install an rpm, and yet they install something else that requires it and it doesnt detect it on some occasions. This is not something id look at as not that bad. I prefer source myself but the .tgz works great for me, never had a problem once with it. As for bringing the world of Redhat and Debian together, why taint a good dist with redhat? I personaly dont like apt, but i like rpm even less, and then making a GUI for it? come on people. the more we step away from the console the lazier we get, the more vulnerable we get, and i dont want to say this cus a few friends use a lot of GUI but the dumber we get. Why do you need a gui for something so simple? And this brings up the question does it require X? if so im already sold on ANYthing else. a frontend is one thing. and what about the whole rpm version incompatability thing? you dont see this with tgz. I really dont want to upgrade to a new pkgtool or installpkg/upgradepkg to move on to slack 8.1. Am I just a lunatic user/admin gone anti-gui because of m$ or do other people share my views?

I have grown to love slackware in all its glory. Who the hell needs apt-get? And dont get me started with RPM and all its flawed wonder. I have no problem with downloading things for myself. and who says you cant just make a script? and of course yes the simple upgradepkg utility will work wonders. and if you REALLY need direction the pkgtool. besides which if you partition your system right you wont need much work done if you do need a good ol reformat. and the new 8.0 offers 2.4.19 or a 2.4.x kernel choice. I dont think every dist offers you a choice. I dont install many packages at any rate but .tgz is fine for me, ive also noticed slackware packages have been worked on a bit adding things to some of them that are useful, no examples at this time for i have the memory of a nat =] id like a good valid argument as to why slackware would die out. I dont want any of that "oh its not userfriendly" bull. Its plenty userfriendly for me. Hell even as a newbie i installed it fine. And it still has apps to "do things for you" somewhat. all done in ncurses. And the work fine, what more do you need? If your running a server why would you in your right mind install an X server. And if someone really needs to be ridden in excess GUI to configure his system then fine, go use redhat. But ill be happy with my distro. I know plenty of people who use slackware religeously. Sure maybe they dont release new versions as quick as others but when its out you can sure as hell bet its worth it. Slackware is here to stay for a while, dont count us out yet.
