  1. You can get OSX to *run* but... on Beige G3 Resurrection Project · · Score: 1

Add memory. Lots of it, and you can get OSX to run on your G3 266.

But you will never be productive.

I know. I have a 266 too. I was seduced. And had my heart broken by the siren osx. It'll run. But it won't be as good as OS9 on that box.

The mac is great because it just works. But this isn't so with OSX on a G3. Don't do it! You'll be sorry. And you'll come crawling back to OS9.

Or you'll realize the value of your own time, and just bite the bullet and buy a used G4. If you possibly can, why not save yourself the trouble and go straight to that step.

For those loathing to click on msnbc, here is a less Microsoft-profiting and more insightful article at space daily:

Pushing "wrong button" may have caused Soyuz space landing error

  4. antibiotics arms race on All We Want Is Whatever's On Your Machine · · Score: 2, Insightful

Seems to me that the RIAA and other such groups should think twice before declaring the start of this new arms race.

It's like doctors questioning the overprescription of antibiotics -- the more agressive their weapons become, the more clever we will become in working around them. Increased use of antibiotics and other agressive medicine is creating superbugs. The same is true online:

As the internet becomes more dangerous for p2p networks, only the stronger networks will survive.

  5. Tesla did this 100 years ago. on The Lamps Are The Network · · Score: 1

Man, why does nobody ever remember to credit Nikola Tesla with the things he invents, such as RADIO, AC ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION, REMOTE CONTROL, and, of course, the still popular (after 100 years!) fluorescent LAN! Sad thing is, it's not a conspiracy any more... he really has been forgotten.

  6. Wanna see something scary? Censorship is not dead on Bootlegging Buffy · · Score: 1

Remember... we may have the power now but the forces have already aligned to take it away. China, Australia, yes, but also big money in the US. Maybe YOUR boss isn't using one of these services, yet... but censorship CAN happen. Here are some companies that are MAKING IT SO...
    www.cyberpatrol.com
    www.n2h2.com
    www.surfwatch.com
They provide services for your employer, university, isp, etc. to block not only sex drugs etc., but also specific political content. Scary.
