I love the idea of having X on my intel box. I bought 1st gen powerbook when the second gen came out. That was probably the best decison of my life. I love OS X. but see the problem is Microcrap. people have said what about office and they are right. But also people are fogetting that Microsoft actualy OWNs a small but infuental part of apple. So they are holding a gun to apples head in two respects. Office and the stock. The only reason that Microsoft keeps apple around is to "try" and not look like a monopoly.
This sounds wonderfull at the top level of thought. The idea of puting that many machines with linux on them in the hands of uncorrupted children. What a wonderfull world. But Linux still has one major downfall, It's not easy to configure the hardware. (Yes i know it does it better than it used to and is getting better every day but it still isn't the "it just works" that MS shit has) So if this were to happen what would MS do.....
The first thing they would do is make sure that there are as few identical machines as possible. Make hardware in each box different.
the Next thing they would do is offer to have there staff help to "install" Linux making sure NOT to set it up correctly.
and then just sit back and wait... schools will get fed up with trying to support all the different hardware models and trying to get the installs right that they will crawl back to MS begging to buy there bad software.
So in the end millions of kids accross the nation will have there first experience with computers and Linux be a complex frustrating task and will FOREVER be turned off from the Unix Linux world.
I finaly woke up to the real world only a few moths ago. (That is when i finaly switched to Linux) This story came about when i first installed linux on my box "The purple Monster".
It was about 2 in the morning when the linux install finished, and it was time for bed. I knew I had to get up for class in 4 hours. So i ran "shutdown -h now". and turned off the computer by the physical power switch and climbed into bed. after 20 minutes i'm supprised to roll over and see linux booting on my computer!! so i once again shut down the sytem and turn off the power. Again after 20 minutes the computer came back on. the quote of the day " You can't keep good things down". i kind of laughed at this but i was creaped out because the system wouldn't stay off. So once again i shut it down and it booted back up while i was away at class. I asked around and nobody had ever seen such a thing. I do not have a WOL card or any other type of remote bootup. This continued for a week when i finaly figured out that my power management and Linux do not play well.
Anyhow that was my first introduction to linux and i'll never go back. That and it was kind of creepy.
