  1. Re:What's left of them? on Neanderthal Genome to be Sequenced · · Score: 1

I believe "when humanity almost went extinct" is incorrect. The bottleneck is merely due evolution from of a small sub-population, which was geographically isolated from other populations of homo. Also, the timing at 150K years ago is speculative, afaik. There is also the African exodus events starting about 70K years ago.

Evidence of any interbreeding is limited to a single specemin and based on morphology, not genetics. All genetic evidence shows a very wide gap (see talk.origins).

  2. Re:New Method? on To Mars and Back in Ninety Days · · Score: 2, Insightful

We've got high powered propulsion options pouring out of our ears. It all comes down to getting funding. Wave a plan near congress and they're sure to kill it before breakfast.

This is exactly the problem with govt funding. It is too expensive to experiment. The real problem is to make sure NASA does not get involved with this or it will fail as surely as your 101 'old methods' have.

Tim Bray was one of the founders of open text corporation ... they INVENTED the search engine.
Digital (with whom they were working) "stole" the idea and opened Altavista 3 months before their IPO.
I worked for Open Text for a year but after Tim left (just about the time the 1.0 draft of the XML spec appeared).

  7. Scale on NASA Satellite Measures Earth's Carbon Metabolism · · Score: 0

The scale on these diagrams is kg of carbon per square kilometre per year. The values are up to about 3. This seems completely bogus. Think about how much mass a aquare kilometre of trees must gain in one year. It's not all water ...
