  1. I see this happening... actually on Dump Broadband, Dig Out Your Modem! · · Score: 2, Insightful

Even out in a rural area in Minnesota, I've seen this happening for about the last month. Nothing major, but a customer here, a customer there, maybe 2 for a month, dropping High Speed to return to dialup.

Reasons I've heard so far 'too expensive', or 'expense did not justify the speed' and what not. Let's face it, this isn't cable. We've got DSL out here, and people are paying for it. NOt cheap, it's under the control of the local telco's, and if I were not an employee getting major discounts, I probably would not get DSL.

For the average home user, what advantages does DSL or other high speed alternatives give them? Faster downloads? Everyone likes that, but it's where most of the 'benefits' end. Most of the folks who have DSL out here don't know enough to understand how to save files into particular places, let alone how to watch streaming videos.

So what do the people who's kids talked them into getting DSL get, after their kid leaves? Not a lot, if they don't really know how to use their computer, or if all they do is browse CNN/stock sites, and do email. What's the point in paing that much more per month, just to do email? Not a lot, I'd say...

It does make sense. Until ISP's don't gauge prices, it won't matter. Sad thing is, we aren't even gauging prices. We're making a little money now, but we had to pay to have a lot more range then any city DSL company, with fewer subscribers.

  2. Oh the possibilities! on Text-to-Speech on a Low-Power Chip · · Score: 1

Oh imagine them! TO have one of these babies that understood more languages, and could translate them to one of the others. Need a real translator? Nooope, watch my lil PDA Do it for me!

Seriously, that could have tremendous bussiness implications for those who are doing bussiness in other countries.

Their usage of EEPROM is nothing ut ingenious, why hasn't anyone done this before? Or have they? It makes a lot more sense then a flash card, and it's cheaper too.

I just didn't bother counting them. After I read what they said, there was not enough to count them. Laziness is a technicians best friend.

"More changes to stats report" Bug fix changes, or just changes? It'd be pretty nice if the changelog was a little more detailed. When there are a whopping 4 entries in it, you could give a little bit more detail.

  6. Gobe for BeOS on Looking At Gobe · · Score: 1

Gobe on BeOS was a pretty nice application. I remember when my friend was reviewing it, and we spent a long while testing it and trying to do things with it. Back then, this was around a pre-release of BeOS 4 I think, it was not too bad, but it had a ways to go.

The real question is, will it really offer us anything that we don't already have?

Well, if they impliment it like the Windows version, it'd have PDF save, which is always nice. The major thing I think, would be the Word abilities. If it actually has decent open/save functionality with Word documents, then I think this could be a very popular app. Let's hope they put the thought into development for us that they did for Windows, and give me a tar file! I Don't want no stinkin RPM!

NOw to wait and see if Gobe takes over all of our documentation efforts, or if it flops. Personally, I'm rooting for Star Office....

  7. Power & Current Alternatives on The (Possible) Future of Alternative Energy · · Score: 5, Informative

Why is everyone so affraid of Nuclear power? Pound for pound, Nuclear Energy is far cleaner and environmentally friendly then coal power plants, that's been proven already. The chances of a catastrophic reactor melt down are not very likely, as long as they are properly maintained and staffed. While I'm all for new forms of energy, we are currently not even using what is within our grasps. How can we expect power companies, who have a lot of money sunk into their current operations, to change their way of thinking? I doubt they see it as a viable thought to try these things out when they may flop. I have little faith that anything such as this article describes will be used, when we are not even using Nuclear Energy to what it could be. Look at the Navy, they have tons of nuclear reactors on their ships. Have there been any indicents with them? Not that we know of, and it'd be hard to hide something like that. Of course, those are smaller reactors, but none the less, it just proves the government knows what is going on. They are using the technology we already have, while the power companies are still stuck back a 100 years ago.
