One of the problems with cancelling DSL may be timing. Earthlink, for example, requires a one-year contract and if you break it they charge you $200. I'm sure other providers do this as well. So is it worth it to cancel if you have say 6 months left to serve on your sentence? At $50 a month it's only gonna cost you $100 more to keep it than cancel.
As far as the pricing goes, if you're someone like me who doesn't need a regular phone line ( I have a cell phone and generally don't chit chat on it for hours on end) then a $40 cable modem is going to be cheaper than dialup ($25 phone line + $20 ISP). Unfortunately for me, no one offers cable broadband in my area.
