If I didn't know what /etc/ppp/hosts.conf was, maybe I would use Redhats point and clicky thing to set up my internet access. But As I only use a distro with a RedHat Kernel (Mandrake) Gee,it was set up at install. How omniscient of you to KNOW what I have and have not done. (this guy knows his pppd is crashing....etc) Once again proving my point about SNOOTY GEEKS (not all being that way). Do you realize that the few geeks with the know it all attitude are Linux BIGGEST obstacle in gaining marketshare or just general acceptance. Do this little piece of REAL LIFE MATH. Coworker:"say Bob(snooty geek), is that Windows XP? It looks really cool!" + Snooty Geek: (working with KDE on laptop)"says NOOO" laughs sarcastically and them grumbles about the "point and click idiots" = Coworker that thought KDE looked cool, alienated by snooty geek and will NEVER use Linux. Any questions?

if I wnat to pay $20 more I can get it working under OSS. However, my point was that this is a 3 year old (common) card and it should work out of the box. Truth be told, I'd like to know what to do beyond sndconfig and ./soundon to get it to work with just the YMF-pci module. I can get the speakers to "pop" at bootup but there is no sound even after ./soundon, but there is neither sound from CLI (in quake) or from X/KDE/GNOME/Afterstep or any other of the numerous window managers I have tried out.

WELL, If I were just whining and not doing anything, you'd be exactly right. However, I am President of a LUG, participant in a couple Open Source Projects, and a long time Linux User. I have looked on mailing lists, and have tried a backtrace with the KDE crash handler. (I admit I am not a code GURU) I am NOT just running my mouth about something I have not done anything about. As a matter of fact, I paid retail for my Distro. And fully intend on paying retail for another in a couple weeks when I buy Mdk Gamers Edition. I also gave high praise to those guys at XF86. If you ask me, YOU are a lot of the problem with Linux (off subject). Snooty GEEKS that can't stand to hear that Wind Blows might still have something up on Linux. Open source software is one of the GREAT ideas of ALL time. Cooperation for an end that benefits all who participate. However, you have no right to hide behind GPL or open source on this and then accuse me of whining. After all, this is SUPPOSED to be a forum describing our problems with the 2.4 kernel. I did get latest pppd source and compile it. It didn't work either, which is what makes me think the problem is kernel related. Never had problems like this with 2.2. I LOVE LINUX! And will defend my right to use, and even to whine about it if I want, to the death.

I agree that the 2.4 kernel IS FINE. But that;s about it. Still no support for my "rather common" Yamaha DS-XG Ymf-724. As for the rest of it, I can never seem to keep the pppd from continuously crashing. Pretty bad when the windows partition on the same hardware will stay connected longer than in Linux. Hmmm. BAD LINUX! *smacks his box repeatedly with a sledgehammer* OK rant over! Assuming I don't get a form error, and this actualy posts, I'd like to say that 2.4 (& those guys at XF86)have done a really nice job with the graphics support. I've seen some of the most beautifully rendered imaging from the linux side of my machine. Until a ditro comes around that can beat Mandrake 8.0 for ease of use, reliabilty, support for my sound cards, and a ppp daemon that doesn't crash every hour or two, I will be keeping the Windows install on my PrimaryPartition. Pretty sad huh? what was that my mother said? "AL AL AL ALWAYS PUT SALT IN YOUR EYES
