That's a bit naive, isn't it? Perhaps there is a hardware trigger that will start sending out data when receiving a specific packet and when it doesn't, it stays silent? Or a timed device (6 months from first power-on)... There are many ways that those machines may be compromised without even being affected by the operating system that's on it.

Are you telling me that my AMD Athlon MP was lying at me when it showed two processors in Windows XP Pro? Windows XP Home doesn't allow more than one processor. However as compro01 tried to explain: a processor is not the same as a core. If Microsoft talks about a processor it means the chip put into the socket on your motherboard, this processor can have one or more cores.

So, if you have XP Pro you can have two processor sockets with each having four cores and each of those cores having HyperThreading activated. That would show 2x4x2=16 "processors" in your task manager.

Technically, if Intel or AMD starts to sell a chip containing 128 cores, XP should be able to handle all of them because in Microsofts view it is one single processor.

The problem with this line of thinking is that parents not caring to discuss this topic with a child *are* acting irresponsibly. Consider it as a precursor of sexual education. So, yes, I think marking them up as idiots is 100% correct to do.

You do know that there are books for preschoolers regarding this topic if parents don't want to discuss it with their own words.

Yes, I facepalmed after I submitted this comment because I suddenly remembered Schufa, the German version.

Anyway, in all my adult years I never encountered my credit report ever.... I did have two loans though (one still ongoing... student loan). I now pretty much live as described: within my means and money gets set aside. I hope it won't make problems when applying for a mortgage sometimes in the near future.

You rarely hear of people getting into problem because of their credit reports at this side of the pond. At least, I never have unless you count those reported in those semi-reality-TV shows about people living on Hartz 4 (German specific thing for unemployed people).

I have no real experience with credit reports (I assume they exist in Europe too). However, as far as I understand you need to have had a credit card and/or loan to even have a credit report and having no credit report is inevitably seen as bad.

The problem with this is that a responsible person may go the route of spending the money he has and save up as much as he can. No loans required and avoiding credit cards is a very responsible act....

It may of course that I did not understand correctly how it works.
