  1. Re:The PTO has no incentive *not* to grant patents on Interwoven Patents Code Versioning · · Score: 1

Not only do they not have incentive, but they do not have the time to search for all prior art. A patent examiner typically has 8-24 hours to review a single patent. If the claim is not made in another patent (something they search) or is clearly something they use, they will likely grant the claim. The costs for a perfect system would be astronmical.

  2. Re:I'm underwhelmed AND I'm I hypocrit on Another Office Alternative · · Score: 1

As someone who writes large Java applications for a living, I could not agree more. Java is buggy, but most of the bugs are relatively minor. The bugs would not even be an issue if Sun was to open up the code to the Open Source Community.

At any rate, Java serves a purpose of write one, run anywhere. In my experience, it does this well. The trade off is speed, and responsiveness. In the business I'm in, where we do have to run on many platforms, and we are not writing with the general desktop user in mind, this loss of speed is not a problem. However, A product such as an Office Clone, that will be used by the masses, may infuriate people if the responsiveness is lacking.

I personally stay away from Java Applications because they seem clumsy to use. I'm such a hypocrit for say that since I love to write in Java, but hate to use it.

  3. The ideal business model on The Customer is Always Wrong · · Score: 1

They complain about losing their business model, but I think they have gained a better one. This is an old arguement, but one that I see holds true amongst myself and my peers. I have illegally take music from Napster and Morpheus to listen to. Those tunez that I enjoy, I end up buying the CD... infact in many cases I endup buying all the CD's from a band at one time. Those that I don't listen to... I disgard or neglect. Now if the media companies were actually succesfull in their pursuit... I would not be allowed to sample music (especially because I do not listen to top 40 hits on the radio... but prefer the hard to find music)... I will not buy nearly as many CD's as I do now. Infact I have no need to buy any more, as I have got a large collection that should keep me happy for years to come. There is course a generation where this is not the case. Younger generation may not appricate owning a CD.. but I am sure that they appricate supporting the groups that they enjoy. The biggest thing that annoys me about the lost revenue totals that these companies project to the government is that it does not calculate how much actual revenue would be lost if there was a perfect anti-piracy plan in place. How many of us would go out and but that game or CD if it really costs us 40/15 dollars? Of all the games or CDs I've got free over the net... I would pay for 40% of the CDs (and do), and maybe 0.01% of the games that I check out. I am not going to pay 40$ to get a game that I do not think is adequate.

  4. Re:Why use a PVR? on Excellent Hacks to the ReplayTV 4000 · · Score: 1

Tivo's and Replays end up being cheaper, quieter, and easier to use than building a custom pc. There is software and hardware available, and people have been doing it. But the people that I know enjoy the conveinence of the PVR.
