  1. Re:Where can you buy a Lego Mindstorm? on LEGO Mindstorms: The Master's Technique · · Score: 1

Search E-Bay for Mindstorms by clicking here now. Don't forget to try looking for TECHNIC as well!

It seems the Mindstorms series piques a lot of interest in people, but in practice, a large number of them wind up collecting dust.

The parts collections are the greatest, too, as you can concentrate on getting the good stuff, like sensors, gears, motors and the like.

I would agree with the above 100%, and would also suggest you highlight the Windows Registry vs. Unix-style configuration through the liberal use of configuration files. As a VB developer (I know, haha) who develops and delivers a heck of a lot of applications, the WORST part of Windows is by far the interdependency of DLL's and OCX's and the obfuscation and/or complexity of their configuration. Make sure you clearly illustrate the open nature of Unix's insides, and drive home the fact that low-level configuration results in maximum control, and therefore, maximum ability to identify and correct problems when they do occur. Any VB developer knows the horrors of the old 'DLL Hell', and will FULLY appreciate this.

I'd suggest your school offer a graduate-level course entitled 'Researching and Aquiring Commodity Resources In The Real World' How aquiring a dialup account is so much more challenging then GETTING into school in the first place is so far beyond me, I'm embarrased.

  4. At the heart of the matter... on Accounting Systems on Linux? · · Score: 0, Troll

This question brings up the single most overlooked topic regarding the acceptance of Linux as a mainstream business platform. I'll state it as a hypothetical question:

"When my accounting system suddenly fails without notice, effectively putting my business OUT OF BUSINESS immediately, WHO DO I SUE?"

Until this question can be answered in a positive way, Linux will be relegated to the backend, and sorry to say, non-critical systems such as web servers and the like. A business' bottom line IS their bottom line, period.

  5. Truth in Education on California Takes Issue With Microsoft Settlement Idea · · Score: 1

I'm unsure the motives of either party are the most important factors in this discussion.

If I were paying a hefty tuition for my child, I'd expect that their education was based upon solid principles.

How solid are these principles if nearly school in existence sells its curriculum to the highest bidder?

Of course, corporate grants are nothing new, but they do serve to highlight one of the greatest questions of our education system today - is it REALLY there to educate everyone to the highest degree possible?

    Sigh..........
