Well, maybe you won't get shot for voting for the wrong people, but you will just for being in the wrong neighbourhood at the wrong time..... Instead of shooting for that, they'd better shoot for all those people that voted for the wrong man....
Anyway: People are just conservative by nature, so I suppose it'll take a very long time untill we have real freedom. According to my opinion, there is no freedom, and I live in a country where there's much more (real) freedom than in the US. Of course there's a reason for this. Mankind have not evolved enough. Most of us are still primates that can't think for themselves. That's where laws come in. With that in mind some restrictive laws can be usefull. The big downside to this is of course that is makes people that CAN think for themselves and act "mature" very frustrated.
