  1. Re:technology and voice on Salon on Gollum's Failed Oscar Nomination · · Score: 3, Interesting

the academy should take this kind of acting more seriously.
In the near future there will be more and more actors with this kind of performance. We will start seeing movies with fiction actors and one could be playing as the main character, imagine a full motion picture named The Loveable Alien From Dunno-Whats-the-planet that the main actor is an (guess what) alien with better feelings and moral behavior that we-us humans, and get to the world's likeness at a "Schlinder List" or higher scale.

These main (virtual) actor would have done a huge effort from himself to make the wonderfully performed "alien" and get no real credit on an academy award.

  2. Do we really need that Fast and Furious PC ? on 65 CPUs From 100 MHz to 3066 MHz · · Score: 4, Interesting

I have been always a hardware junkie, and as one of many, i have in my "closet" (thats now a room) filled with old cabinets, motherboards, soundcards and alike old-and-dusty equipment.

One day I said "Do I really need a FAST PC to live?",an later "hey, lets reassemble one of those" and i cramped a 16bit soundcard, 100mbps ethernet and a 1.6gig hd to a pentium 166 mobo with 40megs of ram.

Partitioned and Installed(tm) linux and windows95b, tunned the OSs and played mp3s very fine, played Age of empires, browsed internet pretty well and eventually served as a proxy for my house lan.

The PC finally ended as a car mp3 player inside a small cardboard box in my trunk.

The question is: Do we really need Powerfull but Expensive Computers to do what we are used to do on them?

as a side note, check overcaffeinated.net webcomic. Its yet another pretty fun geek comic.

It will be nice if the next version of the robot can avoid obstacles like toys/shoes, or use a mechanic arm, dust-pan-like to lift this stuff up and maybe put it into a small cart the bot is pulling. I would surely buy this next gen of dust-cleaner, but im afraid that it will end chasing my toy-sized dog.
