I think he was just making a point. The DHCP protocol lets an administrator specify *lots* of information, not just about routing. I write a DHCP server for a living, and the vast majority of our broadband customers just want the clients to renew their lease on a regular basis so they have the option of changing the information they're giving out.

No, what's on the wall in that little run-down factory is "I can make a difference". And that, pal, is where we stand: America must work on its image to keep every would-be terrorist from picking up some C4 and getting on a flight.

  3. Business Ethics on Microsoft Caught Rigging ZD Net Poll · · Score: 1
Say the phrase "Business ethics" around your colleagues today and watch the response. Not only does Microsoft have no business ethics, but every day that they are allowed to stay in business we lose more of the few ethics we still have.

I've heard colleagues say things like "That's business". Businessmen are being conditioned to operate in this way, with no sense of responsibility to consumers. Microsoft has forced this industry to operate at an extreme, where lying, cheating and stealing are considered acceptable business practices. If you get the deal, you did good, and that's business. The money justifies the means, and many Americans believe that: if you're rich, you did something right.

It's important to realize the extent of the damage Microsoft is doing. If they were split into a thousand companies today, we'd still be left with a million companies operating with the currently accepted business practices.

  4. Remember HBO? on Satellite Command Security? · · Score: 5, Informative

Many years ago HBO's satellite was overtaken for a few hours by someone in the "northwest quadrant" of the continental US. My electronics teacher at the time told me that most satellites would lock into the strongest signal being transmitted to them, and that most control centers used the least amount of power to get a lock-in. So apparently this guy just used a stronger signal than they were using.

As for hacking the command set? You better believe it. Get four engineers and a large blackboard and you might be amazed at how useless "security through obscurity" really is.

The curious thing is that despite GAs being widely researched for over 20 years, they seem to have found few practical applications that I am aware of.

I was under the impression that the C++ STL was a direct result of Stepanov's work in GAs.

We talk about these things because Microsoft is a criminal monopoly. And they're getting away with committing technology crimes against the public partly because of their wealth, but mostly because the average consumer doesn't understand the nature of the crimes. Until lawmakers understand that Microsoft is using mafia tactics to extort money from consumers we'll continue to fight the injustice.
